The Stray Cats are mentioned in a thread below and it brought to mind Brian Setzer. No, he's never played an Ovation to my knowledge. But the guy is a staggering talent as a guitarist. There are a series of vids on youtube of him 'visiting a local guitar shop' and banging out one incredible rendition after another of tunes like 'Maybelline' and 'Summertime Blues'. All these are put up by a guy named straymouse and all contain the tag "Just Brian and Guitar." Well worth a look.

They were obviously shot many years ago as he is still a skinny kid. But he's still doing it. Go here and listen up and I defy you to sit through the whole thing without coming out the other end smiling, shaking your head and tapping your feet!

Need to get a few CD's of his work. He really is a a fantastic entertainer! Love the Chicken Pickin. Need to work more on that technique.

Thanks for the reminder

Try his album '68 Comeback Special - Ignition!. It's from about 5 or so years ago and is a favorite. Great version of Malaguena on there, too.

I thought it was about Foster's Beer. Staggering without talent.

His later stuff backed by a full orchestra is just sensational. Love the tone of his guitars.

I love watching Setzer play. He is a great guitarist who obviously has a great time when he plays. In some of his videos you can see how he palms his pick to switch from flat picking to finger picking, it's pretty amazing.

I've never really been a fan of the style but there's no question - the boy can play. Love watching guys who get into the zone and just get lost in the moment. He's fun to watch.

Oh man...

I wish I had the time to browse the 'tube more. Thanks for that link - I've never seen those clips before.

Ignition is a great album. Rockabilly Riot is just great music played by a great player too.

Another one to throw into the mix (probably only available on the 'Bay now) is "Rockin By Myself". Essentially a Setzer solo gig, but his brother helps out on a couple of songs. No drums or bass or anything, just the pompadoured Cat himself. Brillant. (Banjo warning on that album, by the way.)

I could listen to that guy play rockabilly all day long.

JB
