New member here. Bought my first Ovation 6 months ago. I have a question I hope someone can answer. I Am looking for a simple digital recording device. I believe the Idea preamp should fit right into my Balladeer 1771lx without any modifications? Is it only older models that require any modification? I have also been looking at the Tascam GTR1. Any advantages/disadvantages? It seems you cant overdub with the Idea? Guitar or guitar/vocals recorded at the same time? Not able to overdub a 2nd guitar part? I would appreciate any thoughts.

Welcome .. :)
Using a separate recording device as opposed to a build in one , would be more versatile and have more possibilities , unless yer Absolutely sure that ya will never ever use anything else but the git. ye have .. that GTr1 looks good or rather the new DR1 ..

If you have an OP-Pro in your Balladeer, the iDea preamp is just a drop-in.

Now I'm gonna defect from my Ovation loyalty and say that you might wanna get the GT-R1...
I have an iDea and I never use it. (I will sell it eventually.)
A quick google search tells me that the Tascam has 80 rhythm tracks and you can Overdub with it.
I believe that would be more versatile, and you can use different instruments to layer stuff on.
And they seem to be similar in price.

And Welcome! (I use to live in Mass... Before it became just MA! :D )

Thank you all for the advice and kind greetings. I was leaning towards the Idea but like the extra versatility of the Tascam. I would probably never need to layer more than 2 guitar parts, and often just record things straight through. In other words, I dont need anything fancy/complex it just for the fun of it. I appreciate all the info! Cheers!

The iDea is a great unit for your Ovation. But if you play more than one guitar, the Tascam might be a more versatile choice.

I had the Tascam and it died on me just about when the warranty ran out. I got a Boss Loop Station and I found that it's much better. There's a newer version the Boss RC-2 that's smaller and cheaper. If all you want to do is record, loop and overdub/layer, it's a nice, well built device.

Check out ideafordummies.com.
I believe Gallerinski worked hard to gather and provide access to this stellar resource.
The site is full of info that the ovation folks left out.
.
While you can drop in the Idea to your Baladeer1771lx, to bring in another sound source you have to drill a small hole to install the aux plug.... not too hard (as I have done 2 installs with out any disasters). Using a IPOD/Zune/MP3 player with the AUX in expands the number of backing tracks you can address .
