My wife transferred a few VHS tapes to DVD and I'd like to share some clips with you guys. Problem is I can't rip the DVDs to the computer and create a YouTube-able clip.

Any downloadable software you guys trust?

If you're working on a Mac under OSX, I strongly recommend Mac the Ripper. It's about to stop being freeware, though, so grab it now while you can!

If you're on a PC under some version of Windows, my best recommedation is the amazing Format Factory - a multi-purpose file-conversion suite that can convert pretty much any kind of video, audio or image file from one format to any other. It can also rip a (not commercially protected) DVD to a wide range of compressed video formats such as DivX, MPEG4 etc.

...and, of course, it's freeware! :D

No, she used something called a Dazzle. The info went through the computer but was not read to the hard drive, just written to the DVD. Now that it's on the DVD I want to rip it into Windows Movie Maker so I can edit it.

I looked at the suggested Format Factory, but got a big wave off from my McAfee indicating it was full of adware and spyware. Not surprising, since it's a free download.

I don't mind paying for the software, but was curious as to what you guys suggest.

to go with one of the better values available, buy/download Roxio Easy Media Creator 2009. you can capture whatever portion of the DVD you want and quickly edit it in Roxio's software, which is much better than Windows Movie Maker. Roxio has a sale going on at $49.99 (half price). it will also convert the file to several format options. you'll want mp4 if the original file is over 100mb.

this software also includes a very decent audio capture and sound editor feature which you might be interested in.

That's really strange. I've got quite a few friends who use FF with no problems, and on my machine, Spybot Search+Destroy has never found any malware in my installation. It's able to be freeware because the interface carries a couple of adverts for Brothersoft and eBay. You just ignore 'em! ;)

Thanks, Ken, for your help. I went to the McAfee Site Advisor concerning this page. They enumerated their objections to Format Factory, and there were comments from users which seemed to be split. You can read it here:

http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/formatoz.com?version=2&core_ver=1....

Given that I've had some battles with adware etc over the years, I elected to avoid the controversial software, temping as it was to download. Once again, I thank you for your help.

Yes, reading that page I can see why you would be put off. As I recall, I got my copy of FF from Brothersoft. Perhaps I should have directed you to their download page instead:

No harm in being cautious, though! :)

Lusov, how familiar are you with DVD formats? And what kind of editing are you talking about? Just isolating a segment?

Hey, Wabbit, got it covered, but thanks! As to formats, I'm gloriously ignorant of what I am doing. I just keep clicking 'til it works.

Something called Magic DVD Ripper. McAfee gave it an all-clear, it's fully functional as a demo and it allows three uses before you buy, less than $40. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of the Roxio, but did the job. (I was working with wmv, BTW)

As long as it did what you needed, cool.
