Location: South of most, North of few | When I got the Academy from Seesquare, I knew there were a few issues with it, most notably the tuners were disintegrating where the strings contact the plastic barrels. I decided to try to do a repair job on them, and it worked out pretty well, so I thought I'd share the info. First, here's what they look like when they start to break.
I cut the old plastic barrels off with a side cutter, which was very easy to do...
That leaves you with this...
I went to Lowes and found these nylon bushings that were really close to the same size, although I had to drill the holes a little to make them fit tightly over the end of the shaft.

So it looks like this.
Just put it back together and a new set of strings. It is much more steel string friendly now with the smaller shafts.

Originally, the 17 was set up to use either nylon or steel, but I'm pretty well stuck on steel strings. I would have put a bushing on both ends, but I figured the plate would support the outboard end, and it seems to work fine. |
