Location: SoCal | Take a look at this video. At about 2:08 you can see strong reflection from the p/u on Glen's guitar. Bet this was the Baldwin Prismatone that Glen used until Ovation had their p/u.

Location: Tennessee | The volume knob on the guitar looks like stock Ovation; I have one exactly like that on one of my guitars. Did Ovation have the preamp but no pickup at that time? |

Location: Scotland | It certainly looks like a Prismatone. Doesn't sound like one though, there's no cord coming from GC's guitar and he's playing into a mike.
The thing is, unless you really need to sound like Willie or early Jerry Reed, then the Prismatone is a pretty nasty pickup. No matter what guitar they're in you hear the pickup, not the instrument. They have a very colored sound which you either like or you don't. I don't. Maybe 25 or 30 years ago I had a bunch of them given to me by Jim Burns (of Burns guitars) who owed me money. He knew I had Ovations and said "take these, they're better than the Ovation pickup" I gave some of them away, used a few on projects and threw away the rest, at least half a dozen. Wish I still had them now that they could be sold on ebay for big bucks, but I certainly wouldn't want to put one in a guitar. |

Location: Indiana | Yes it does look like the Prismatone. I have a friend with one of the original Baldwin gut strings. Decent sounding plugged in... neck like a 2x4 though.
Cool video, Larry McNeely on banjo. I hired him for a jingle session once. Excellent guy and player. |

Location: SoCal | I wander around on the Chetboard and they absolutely worship the Prismatone p/u. Evidently, they go for big bucks. Somebody just got done re-producing them and is selling them. He's considered a god on the Chetboard.....

Location: SoCal | You know, watching this video again, I can't help but think how horrible Glen's guitar sounds. It's that VT bracing. I have no idea how Glen put up with it, but he did for about 3 years..... |
