Some call it inspiration and I've come to realize that it can be nothing short of obsession! I saw this in Sam's gallery Referred to as the "Jim Rickard" Deacon, I was awestruck at the use of a wood PG. Then I saw this one, the "Jim Messina" Deacon. I soon tried to copy the technique and started to do the same on the ever increasing flow of Ebay beat and broken Vipers and Deacons that came my way. You may notice that the two have the same grain pattern in the Walnut used for the PG. I later learned that Jim Rickard, Gene Brown and Dave Boone all had a part in these guitars with Gene being the lead on the Messina project. These two Deacons have been my fastination and have lead me to push my abilities (and fill up my garage). To me the woody pickguards are not an invention but a going forth of what was started long ago. Who'da thunk that the same people that started using plastic to replace wood backs would start using wood to replace plastic pickguards? You gotta love this place! :D

After drooling over the many pics of your artistry, I often wondered what was your impetus with the wood PGs. I just though that it was your talent and signature. Thanx for the history lesson! BTW, each time I see your cat, I choke up a bit. My Slush, now gone over Rainbow Bridge, could have been from the same litter!

I still have that guitar around here somewhere...it has a cherry body, some SCREAMING DiMarzio single coils, and a neck I canabalized off an old Kay semi-hollow body. I may have to drag that out and take some pics. David

Sadly poor finances caught up with me a couple of years ago and a great Double Neck Ric went and then this One of a Kind Deacon. It is in good hands to another member but this along with the Ric I will always regret selling. The Ric I can and will be replacing very soon but unless I can buy back this Deacon there is no way to replace it. I still have a real nice Wood Tailpiece cover to replace the plastic ones. I did place a dark red stained birdseye maple one on the JR deacon and it was the final piece of wood to complete the wood top. Perhaps a current photo can be supplied from the newest owner? Your wood pickguards are fantastic by the way Mike. And that 12 string Deacon you traded me is the best electric 12 I have ever played. Sound, Action, overall looks and comfort. Perfect instrument. I learned my lesson and things do not go out so easily now. It just killed me to see that guitar again........

For members selling Ovations to Members, not an Ebay anouncement board. Thanks AJ, you keep me in mind if ya ever let that JR Deacon go and yeah that maple neck on the JM of Mike's is pretty cool.
