I just bought a used Celebrity, i got a good deal but there are some issues - maybe i didn't get a good deal but either way...

1. It needs new strings - what kind should I use?

2. The pre amp (op20) unit is not secured to the guitar and will literally fall out when i turn the guitar upside down... it looks like there is some sort of rubber gasket in the case but its stretched out larger than the unit.
how do i rectify this?

3. When the guitar is plugged in - pressing the tuner button cuts out the amp - im assuming this is some sort of malfunction?

4. What is the preshape button for?

Welcome.

1. Whatever flavor you like. Factory strings are D'Addario EXP16 or Adamas 1818.

2. The pre-amp is supposed to snap-lock into a metal can.

3. It's supposed to do that so the audience doesn't hear you tuning.

4. Acts like a pre-set EQ that helps to cut down on feedback by reducing the output signal from certain frequencies most prone to affect the natural resonance of the A and D strings.

Drift, welcome aboard!

String choice is very individual. In general, light gauge phosphor bronze are favored. Uncoated strings have a clearer brighter sound but they go dead faster. Elixir Nano are coated strings which last a long time and sound quite good.

The best suggestion is to buy several different brands of strings to see what you like.

I can't help with the loose preamp. Someone else will be along soon who can.

It may vary among different models of preamp, but all of mine will cut out the amp when the tuner is engaged. It is helpful on stage to be able to tune without blasting it out to the audience.

The preshape is a quick fix to the EQ. It will sound pretty good through an amp or PA with that button engaged. You can disengage it and use the regular EQ on board or on the amp. Whatever works best. I've found the preshape to be a nice quick solution when there is no time for a good soundcheck.

As always, we love pictures!

Excellent point about the tuner and the amp does come back when i turn the tuner off - this is a huge relief!!

The pre amp does snap into the metal can - the metal can though is not attached (seems like it should be glued in) to the guitar though so it slips out...??

OK, try this. If the whole assembly (can plus pre-amp) is what's falling out, then take it out of the guitar without yanking and unplugging the wires that plug into it. With the pre-amp oriented so you read the lettering normally, press the big black button at the far left. This will release the pre-amp from the can. Set the pre-amp aside.

Look at the can - there are two swing-out "wings," one on each end of the can, a black one on the left that swings away from you, and a gray one on the right that swings toward you.

Place the can into it's cutout. If there's an access hatch on the back of the bowl, remove it now. Reach into the guitar, and extend each wing as far out from the can as they'll go. On the inside of the can are two Phillips-head set screws adjacent to the wings. Tighten each set screw to raise the wings until they're snug against the inside of the bowl. Snap the pre-amp back in place, affix the access hatch, and you're good to go.

g8r - first of all, thanks so much for the help..

ok, the can that you are describing on my guitar is actually black plastic - there are no wings - maybe they are gone or broke? there are 2 holes on either side of the black plastic can that look like the holes you are talking about but there are no screws and if there were screws, i cant see what they would screw into... also, there is no access hole on the back of the bowl... keep in mind this is a very low end celebrity GC birdseye acoustic electric (which sounds great by the way) - should i take this someplace to get fixed? looks like i'm missing the screws and maybe the wings - unless that's just something i'm missing...

ps - i paid $150 for the guitar and i'm still happy about the purchase despite this problem - been playing Dead tunes all night :)

Sounds like someone took the wings off. There's nothing rattling inside the guitar?

Contact Ovation customer service (860) 379-7575. They don't service the Korean-made Celebrity line, but they might have some spare parts, or even a replacement can, they can provide for a nominal charge. You should make GC provide you with a replacement, though, if that's where you bought it.

You can still secure such a can without an access hatch. The torque you apply when turning the set screws will turn the wings outward.

I'm guessing that the wings (and their corresponding screws) have gone missing. Though why someone would throw them away is beyond me. Try posting some photos so we can see what you're talking about. You'll need to post them on a different website first and then reference them from here.

If you join the social website (See Ovation Social Network at the top of this page) you can post them there and then copy the link and put it in using the "Full Reply Form" below the Quick Reply box.

Should look like this:

That's the right-side (gray) wing shown in its retracted position. Note the metal bar to the left of and attached to the wing. That bar slides up into a shaft when the wing is extended and the screw is tightened. The set screw actually drives into that bar and pulls the whole wing assembly upwards as you tighten it.

Thanks, Johnny. I just put that together myself ("it's Shopped - I can tell by the pixels"). I happened to have a spare OP20 lying around, so I dug it out and took a quick pic.

Not possible. ;) Foreign made, inexpensive, laminate top?

I love hearing stories like this. They put some really pretty tops on those Asian guitars. Just because it isn't expensive doesn't mean it isn't a nice guitar.

Seems like most of the questions have been answered, so I'll just say:

g8r - thanks for the picture. i am missing the entire wing - that sucks - how about dropping that in the mail to me? :)

what's the cheapest american made ovation? i can see this becoming my guitar of choice. i will probably sell this celebrity and upgrade as soon as i get it fixed up... it also reaks of cigarette smoke and cat... some people.

ok so i need a new can then - i will call Ovation and Guitar Center - which i'm sure is where this guitar originally came from.

Welcome Drift...

Contact whomever you bought this from and tell them to send you the parts or a partial refund.

The folks at The Factory (MotherShip) should be able to get them for you.

But I would still get about $40 from the seller! :p
