I just got the new Zoom Q-3 video recorder and here is a little demo of what this thing can do. This is unglugged, just the built in condenser mics recording the guitar. For $250 it's a good tool to help you practice, record new ideas, and get you to playing under pressure. Zoom Q3

Recording your practise sessions (etc) and listening back is an essential way to improve your tone. Tone is king!

Yeah, speaking of tone, those are really old strings on that guitar. My Everett is my goto guitar for fingerstyling with its 1-3/4" nut, but this one was hanging on the wall next to the desk.

TBH I didn't even have the sound on! I was just agreeing that recording is a really useful develop process.

Had a look at the Everett site. Woo they look lovely, are they just pieces of visual art or do they sound as good as they look?

Well now that I have this thing working, I'll do some things on the Everett and you can hear. (It's a beautiful sounding guitar, with the best tonewoods available)

Thanks BT. That's a '99 Collectors Edition, which I actually want to replace with something with a 1 3/4" nut....maybe a Folklore, since about all I do is fingerpick and my fat fingers have trouble with these narrow necks.

Sounds good. Didn't look like you had any trouble with the skinny neck. You should keep that guitar and add the Folklore.
I had a bit of trouble hearing your voice, but I didn't have the volume up too loud at the office. I wouldn't want the young punks on either side of me thinking I was listening to old fogey music again. They think chords only have 2 notes and a lot of distortion.

I really enjoyed your demo, Dark.
I'm interested in the Q-3, and I wonder if you,(or anyone listening) have any experience with a Zoom H4. Mainly how the two compare in terms of sound quality.
I own a zoom h4 but have embarrassingly rarely used it, to it's potential because it is way over my head.
This unit seems like a more user friendly for the techno-challenged.

Supposedly the Q3 uses the same exact mic setup as the H4....it's really pretty good for a portable little device. I recorded a song also and the recording quality was really good. I had it on youtube for a few days, but ultimately pulled it cause it was an "unplugged" example, and I thought it could use a little reverb and/or delay.
As for as user friendly, I am a techno-retard, so if I can figure it out then anyone can. Super easy instructions in the package.

Picked one up myself. I also own an H4n and like rededdie, have embarrassingly rarely used it! But the Q3 is embarrassingly easy to use!

I emailed Zoom with the straightforward question: are they the same mics. I know they're in the same configuration, but that doesn't mean they're the same mics! I can do a side by side test, but that means I would have to power up the H4n and actually use it! LOL

Anyone interested in buying an H4n hardly used? (seriously)

Anyway, the Q3 really is simple.
