I have been watching the interest in the old Balladeer on Ebay.
Dont want to piss on the parade, but my 2 cents.
I have a 1968 Balladeer, # A-57,sunburst,very rare guitar. Some of you have seen it here and in my "ning".
As most of us would do,I did ALOT of research on old Ovations. Not just with this one,all of my O"s.
#1. Wrong tuners and stories of "Factory Replacement".By an old lady that worked there.
Yea,right.
#2. Wrong top.Same as above,it is a 2 piece top,these years had 3 piece tops.
#3. Wrong inlay, same story.Little old lady that worked there 40 years ago chose the top, inlay, tuners.
Sorry if I sound skeptical,but I am.

Yea,right.
I take no position one way or another on the matter but I would say that when I looked at the close up shots of the tuners my first thought was that it didn't look like the hand of a craftsman had done the install. One of the middle tuners wasn't flush mounted and, as for the one where the crack started, it seemed unlikely that anyone who knew what they were doing would put a screw in that location with the wood curving away regardless of whether the pilot hole was properly drilled or not. That install just didn't look right to me and at the time I doubted that it was done by a guitar factory.

Ah, another 'expert' So you've seen every early Balladeer have you? And by early I mean 3 digit serial numbers without a letter suffix, placing the guitars as built in early '66.

Here's what you don't seem to know. Not all of them had 3 piece tops. A bunch of the very early Balladeers were 2 piece. Same with the inlay, before the rope pattern they used inlaid wooden rosettes. I've personally seen and played Balladeer number 036 (or thereabouts) which belonged to Mr Kaman Sr., and it's identical to the guitar you're talking about. Next you'll be suggesting the 'incorrect' long truss rod cover is fake too.

You are perfectly entitled to be skeptical, but you are also equally entitled to be entirely wrong.

I believe it is all legit.

It would be a lot of bother to go through to sell a guitar that's worth maybe what, 600 to 800 bucks?

Thanks Willa !!
It's a small on-going thing I've started almost two years ago trying to tell "in Italian" the history of our beloved Ovation and Adamas guitars. It is a way for me to learn as much as I can about Ovation with the help of all of you at the OFC. Soo I have to thank YOU ALL and again a special thanks go to JEROME that support me in this and gave me a permission to quote/use most of the Tribute.com archive.

Can the MS put one of those on my guitars? Thrashing-to-music translator, brilliant!

Riccardo,

Hadn't been to your site lately. Nice job! You've done a lot of work since the last time I visited.

Is the translate button in Italian? I was looking for one and didn't find it. I'll spend more time on it at home tonight, if I can get on the internet. I haven't been able to the last couple nights. There's a lot of nice stuff on there, Riccardo.

Sorry I was rude about the old O.
I was half in the bag.
But I do think all of this info is a good thing for all of us O fans.
Seems there are alot of strange, one of a kind and very early O's out there.
Nobody seems to be looking for them but us.
Thats a good thing.
When it comes to talking about old guitars, all I can think of is when I was about 16 (Im 50),I could go to any music store and see 50's,60's,and new 70's guitars.Teles,Strats,Martins, you name it.All for 100 dollars or so.(The used ones)
I dont want to look back at the time I missed all those old O'that are out there now.

I had a chance to buy a 56 Les Paul gold top for about $1,100 back around 76 or so. The shop even loaned me the guitar for 3 or 4 days.

Mark, there wasn't a translate button; just add today to the blog the function "google translate". Thanks

Ultrafan don't want to spoil your thread. Your Balladeer is fantastic ! I love that burst.

I agree, and would have to say the Grover installation was done as a favor by someone at the factory... otherwise they would have swapped the left side for the right placing the screw tab on top... and not causing the HS separation and also allowing the tuning machines to fully seat.

It will be back up for sale, the next time with all the documents, autographs, brochures, signatures, group photos, receipt etc...

Mrs. Carney says she paid around $200 for the guitar in '66.... but I thought they were price-pointed around $149 weren't they? anyway we'll know for sure when we see the receipt.

Dave's right... to anyone else this is just a busted up Ovation... but there's about 7000 of us interested in it.. at least from a historical point of view.

They are still not sure if they are going to have the repairs done, and re-install Klusons, or leave it as-is.. and just sell as a package deal.

Walter deals in militaria and old weapons, so he does know how documentation, history, and full provenance can affect the value of an item.

also, they could probably sell the set of "Patent Pending" Grovers for about what the repairs will cost.

regards,

Glenn
