Joined: November 2006 Posts: 3969 | My take on EC's Lonely Stranger: Lonely Stranger Adamas I 1687-8 #4020-92 (main) Ovation 1537-1 #301922 (rhythm fills) Both guitars run thru a Baggs Para Acoustic DI then into Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer and recorded on a Zoom MRS-4. Vocals recorded with a Shure MXL990 straight to the mixer then the recorder. Mixdown done with Reaper, using Kjaerhus Audio Classic Compressor and ReaVerbate (reverb) VST plugins on the guitar tracks. Rendered as a 128-bit mp3 using Lame encoder. Backup vocals by our dear friend Kietha.

Joined: November 2006 Posts: 3969 | Thanks, guys. Bobbo, that was the 4th take on the Adamas, the second take on the 1537. No mic on the guitars, they were both straight to the board thru the DI. Still not happy with the (my) vocal and the mix could use some tweaking to optimize for poor speakers, but it's a start. More soon, featuring Keitha on vocals so you won't have to suffer listening to me :D

After listening to it thru computer speakers instead of my Sennheiser studio headphones, I didn't like the mix, so I re-mixed and posted that up on ning instead. Direct link to new mix

Doing that lets you isolate and manipulate each "instrument" to get an acceptable mix (or add effects like reverb, compression, EQ). I actually had a fair bit of headroom on each signal, so I was able to boost the gain on the lead vocal track, at the same time cutting the gain slightly on the guitar tracks. That gave the vocal more punch in the mix without clipping.

'Carving out' a frequency range in the instrument tracks where the vocals sit will help to make the vocals clearer while not overpowering the other tracks. I'm sure the Magic Scot could explain it better.
