: Ovation Balladeer
Kaman changed the nature of acoustic guitars with the introduction of the roundbacked Ovation Balladeer in 1966. With its composite material bowl, the shape hearkened back to lutes while the construction was profoundly "space age." This revolutionary approach was due in large part to Kaman's core business, which not guitar manufacturing, but rather aviation engineering.
At the prompting of Glen Campbell, who wanted to play the Balladeer on his popular TV show without having to mic it, Ovation created an internal pickup with preamp that helped revolutionize the notion of acoustic electric guitars. The Balladeer in its various iterations -- Custom (shown here), Artist, Deluxe, etc. -- immediately became popular with guitarists who wanted to play an acoustic in a live setting without the attendant feedback and muddy tones.
The unique round back has both its proponents and detractors. It is worth noting that the notoriously persnickety Robert Fripp (founder of King Crimson) insisted that students use Ovations when attending his Guitar Craft classes. |

Location: Novi, MI | Guitar opinions are like butts, everyone has one and most of them stink.
I LOVE my ovation, LOVE my Epiphone and my Mexican Strat. I bought a $30 Nylon string that sounds as good as a $1000 guitar, I got lucky with it. My ovation plays better than some Taylors I have tried. But a Martin I tried kicked its butt. Guitars are all different and basing your opinion on a guitar brand on hearsay is dumb not to mention on one experience with an instrument.
The only guitar I bought before playing for more than 30 minutes was my first and it's gone. I normally don't look at brand names and just play the guitar and listen to it. Besides, my guitar looks AWESOME... best looking acoustic/electric I have seen! |
