Hey Gang, there is someone locally who has an Ovation John Lennon for sale. He says that it is in "collectors" condition. How much would these be worth? He says that this is the original 1980 version not a re-issue?

The 1651-7 Legend Ltd is the same model appearing on the cover of John Lennon's Acoustic album and were built in 1981-1982. When the reissue model came out a few years ago, it was nicknamed the John Lennon model for this reason. Some say the reissues are a bit more desirable because of updated components. I have an original that I bought new in 1981 and it was my only gigging guitar for the next 20 years. It has thousands of hours on it and it sounds fabulous. My guess is that original mint models are in the $700 range (it is, after all, a preferred A-braced Legend), with used models dropping down to about $500 or possibly less depending upon condition. New, they sold in the $400 range as I recall.

The Legend Limited (1651-7) was basically a Custom Legend without the abalone purfling and a nutmeg (-7) finish. People often refer to it as the John Lennon guitar as he used it on his last album and the songs "Woman", Darling Boy" and "Watching The Wheels" are said to be played on his guitar. Here is a photo linked from ovationtribute.com:

The 1651 was made from about 1979 until about 1983. They are well regarded guitars and continue to be sought after because of their sound, playability, and unique color.

In 2004, the Japanese distributor ordered 100 reissues of this guitar as a John Lennon tribute as people were remembering the 25th Anniversary of his death. The reissues were built to the same general specs as the original (AAA top, A-Braced, pearl diamonds and dots on ebony fretboard, bound neck, stereo electronics), but had the new Lyracord GS bowl formulation and advanced neck system. At the end of the run, six of these guitars were made available to Lost Art Vintage and remained in the US. Owners (well me, anyway) claim this to be the holy grail of Ovation wood topped guitars.

Pricing is tough to call. For a regular production run model, expect it to be nearly the same as a custom legend of the same period and condition. What you can buy them for changes from guitar to guitar, but I would estimate that a good deal for both a buyer and a seller will range from $600-$900. YMMV.

EDIT: Sorry, I'm a real slow typist. The Professor beat me to some of the answers while I was hunting for keys on my laptop.

Lennon died in 1980, so as Stonebobbo points out, there had to be some 1651 models available before then since photos were taken of him using one in the studio. Maybe it is a Patriot with the decal scrubbed off?

What the Prof and Rock Bottom said is right on. I think the reason behind the 1651 was that there were tops left over from the run of the Bi-Centenial (does that mean that guitar goes both ways?) guitar, so they were made into the what became the Lennon.

And Rock Bottom is correct. They are (like all A braced deep bowl Ovations), the top of the line of wood topped O's...

tops left over from the Bi run. Hadn't heard that one before.
Let's try it this way, the colour was popular and the Bi was a limited so the way for marketing to keep selling more guitars was to come out with something the same but different.
