I love the sound of minor keys, in all genres from Reggae to Classical.

QUESTION: what is your approach to the basic sequence of the V7th to the i minor when you play lead or write a melody? B7 to Emin or D7 to Gminor.

EXAMPLE: If you're going from E7th to Aminor what's your trick? (Of course the V will be an alt chord if you extend it E7b9 etc.)

For one the Gypsy guys seem to emphasize the "diminsihed" sound...

I tried E7/9 A13 A13b Am sounded fine. Seems to work also with E7/9b. What do you think?

It's tough to drag this crowd up but you've got to admire the effort.

Tread carefully! I can only hope that this thread does not go as horribly wrong as the last one that questioned theory....

Well, if I am on the way to "home base" A minor...
over the E7 I like the notes D, F, G#, B (D F G# B)
up up or down down .... sounds cool!

The "diminished" arpeggio a la gypsy!

I also notice that "shredder" dudes love this sequence.

This lesson is pretty good too. Innaresting how they tune up - kinda like an orchestra, chaos and then suddenly everything is perfectly tuned:

A cosmic minor solo is Buck Dharma on "Don\'t Fear the Reaper" [start: 2:44] An all-time favorite!

(he's using a G scale based on C harmonic minor starting on the 5th scale step is used: the "flamenco" 5th mode).

on the Vivaldi clip,

wish the Adamas was plugged in, it just sounded thin and weak compared to the classical

wish LC put a bit more Jazz zing into his part, the classical counter part was so strong in its own territory; i always love LC's playing nonetheless

That was my first impression as well but then it occurred to me that maybe they wanted to separate the tonal ranges quite a bit so that the Ovation was kinda filling in something like a harpsichord sound in the background with the full coloured classical guitar sound up front. If the Ovation was plugged in they might not have got that effect.

Also, there's better youtube clips from that concert; I just used that one because I was fascinated by them tuning up at the beginning.

On the other hand, Adamases sound better unplugged. Maybe the micing was poor? I thought Larry played decently!

I'll let him know. When he wrote it, he just played the notes that sounded right to him.

Also to answer the question...

" If you're going from E7th to Aminor what's your trick? "

Simply play the notes that sound right to you. Depends on how long the transition is, the melody line etc etc etc.. Maybe I'm missing something but seems like a tough question to answer out of context.

Just to avoid being a smartass, I picked up a guitar and just did some strumming and in about 2 minutes came up with maybe a dozen transitions... which lead me to realize there was more to the question.

It's funny, my daughter is taking piano lessons from an "Old School" Russian. So she has to do scales up and down: harmonic minor, natural minor, melodic minor. It IS true that there are many options that sound beautiful but very different!

One of my faves: A C major scale with flatted 3 (Gb)can be made to sound SWEET over a B7 chord (that's part of an E minor song)
