I have owned several Ovations in the past 15 years. My latest was a 1990 1868 Elite that I LOVED!! But in a sudden bout of G.A.S traded it in on a Taylor 414. Well I am wanting to acquire another Ovation and herein lies my question.
I prefer the Super Shallow bowl, and I like the looks of the non-cutaway BUT with the double Epaulets instead of the center hole....is the such a creature that has this combination?? |

Unfortunately (and to my knowledge), non-cutaway SSBs were made very few in numbers, and I think they were of the Adamas variety. Ovation made one for Alan Holdsworth (Adamas I in blue) and can be seen at this page.

Ok, my next option would be do they make a Super Shallow bowl cutaway with the Epaulets like the 1868...but with a slotted head?? |

Location: Colorado | You're obviously a person who knows what they want and I think that's a good thing. As far as I know, your request is not a model available other than a custom order (if money is no object and you have great patience). There may be someone who has a custom such as this, but you would have to locate them and see if they are willing to part with such a unique and rare guitar, but the OFC is the place to seek such treasures.
My question to you is why a slot-head (looks or some other benefit)? Another question is, other than comfortable to play, why a shallow bowl? Are you willing to compromise one for the other? If you are, call Al Pepiak (Lost Art Vintage) to talk about the '08 Collector's Edition Adamas. This is a contour-bowl slot-head and bass-side only epaulet, but an extraordinary instrument from what I've read. Supposedly there are a couple left.
Like I say, stick around. Someone might have something hidden in the cellar and would be willing to part with it. Meanwhile, check out Ovation Tribute and look at some of the rare and custom stuff that has been made. There is a 1537 prototype with a shallow bowl and Adamas II neck in the Rare Ovation Guitars and Prototypes page.

I guess I will just have to find me another 1868 Elite. LOL
By the way, as far as Ovations models go where does an 1868 Elite fit in? Middle of the road, high end, lower than middle?? Ovation has SO many model numbers/names its kinda confusing to figure it all out. I am used to dealing with Taylors where the higher the number the higher the quality (so to speak). |

Location: Sydney, Australia | If you haven't tried a contour bowl, then you should. You may find it is as comfortable as a shallow bowl. If you like the contour bowl, then the 2008 Adamas Collectors is hard to pass up. I love mine! |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | This is the Adamas wood-topped 1537 prototype SSB with the original FET stereo. The tone of this model sounds unique compared to, say, the 1881 or another wood-topped Ovation SSB. I prefer the SSB models for band gigs. This photo has been posted here a few times before.
