General question - Was gigging with a Irish trad band last night. I play with this group regularly. One of the guys plays a bozouki and mandolin which are as everyone knows - round backs. As this was the first gig with them were I brought along my Pacemaker (did I tell you I recently got a beautiful pacemaker from Canterburystrings and did I say how much I love it - anyway) it got me to thinking - does anyone know if Ovation ever considered a wooden roundback for their guitars?
A lot of musician snobs turn their noses up at Os because of the perceived inferior 'plastic' round back. We all don't share that view - which is why we are here - but did Ovation ever consider it????

Some else did at one time. Think it was Hohner.....From a production standpoint, a LOT easier to mold the round back that cut strips bevel and glue....

If you have the time, here's a link to Jeff W's famous "Wooden Roundback World Tour". Pour yourself a nice full glass of Jameson's and enjoy!

The Wooden Roundback World Tour

There was also a wooden roundback produced by an Ovation employee who was an OFC member by the name Luthier444 (I'm not sure if that is his correct name). I'm sure someone here knows and can correct if I'm in error.

Or, in this case, Little Tiny Squares...

A guy named Miroslava Kamanczyki tried making wood bowl guitars with plastic tops, but they never really caught on outside of his immediate family.

Great images! I wonder what the sound difference would be? There is something really beautiful about the images of the wooden roundbacks in the pictures. The creaters of these instruments have made a little work of art.
Thanks for sharing.

The one I played sounded ... well... marginal.
There are many / much more other factors involved that makes a guitar sound good (or bad).

The link that Grif gave talks of overlaying the O roundback with a wooden shell - interesting idea!

I wonder if wood roundback might shake up the market
and remove some objections to Ovation.
