The treble-side adjustment screw on the neck pickup on my Viper appears to be stripped as that side is much lower than the other (about 5/16 inch from string - manual recommends 3/32 from string)and turning the screw does nothing. So I'm building up courage to pop off the pickguard and check out the problem. This is the first time I've done this on a guitar so any hints or just words of encouragement would be appreciated.

So first I take off the strings and then remove all of the knobs right? Any tips in knob removal? They don't respond to gentle pulls. And then simply remove the pickguard screws and all should be clear right?

No need to remove the knobs, they are attached to the pickguard.

1. Place a Capo up near the 14'th fret.
2. loosen strings.
3. remove bridge screw on back of guitar if older style bridge. If Schaller metal bridge, loosen strings enough to get the bridge off.
4. You'll want to do a string change later, but for now... just to see what's going on, the Capo keeps the strings from getting all tangled and allows you to remove the pickguard.
5. remove all of the screws from around the edgoe of the pickguard.
6. Raise the NECK pickup (using the adjustment screws) as high as it goes. Don't force it, just get it up. This helps the pickup clear the cavity it sits in.
7. carefully lift off the pickguard, insuring you don't put any pressure on the part around the neck area as those little points will break off easily. There may be a ground wire that clips to the bridge screw... maybe not.

At this point.. you should be able to see what's going on. The pickups height adjustments on Vipers are a screw into a piece of plastic. The plastic likely failed, not the screw. It may have also just come out by being screwed too far, and just needs to be aligned and screwed back in.

Awesome, thank you Miles! Indeed, the screw was undone enough and that spring is strong enough that the screw threads were not contacting the plastic part enough to engage. I restarted the screw and it's perfect now.

Ah, very clever Bru. As I was looking at the plastic I was wondering if plastic failure was inevitable at some time. I'll file that idea away for later.
