Does anyone know a place in NJ where I can take my Legend for a set up? I just bought it used and it's got real high action. Maybe it just has too many shims but I'd like someone who knows what they are doing to check the neck, adjust the truss rod, and clean it up, etc... actually right now i can't tell if the neck is twisted or bent or if it just needs a slight adjustment...

so anyone in North Jersey or NYC I can bring this to?

i took off the strings, and the saddle and removed 2 of the 3 shims... I'm going to clean off the fretboard with some sort of lemon oil (there's some green mold along the frets) then i'm going ot tighten the truss rod a teensey bit and re string it... hopefully this works and i dont screw it up.

Before you tighten the rod you should try to see if removing the shims was enough and maybe remove the third shim as well. Maybe that will do it already.

Yeah, you should restring it before turning the rod. Removing the shims could be enough. You can leave the last shim inside and restring it. If the action is still too high, just lower the strings a lot and remove the last shim. Check again. If it's still too high you can start to think about the rod.

*Edit: It's actually easier to remove all shims, then restring, and if the action should be too low then, detune and put one shim back in. Sorry.

Did you check the neck relief before you took the strings off?

You need to establish what the neck relief is before you start screwing with the truss rod and no more than a quarter turn at a time.

If you didn't measure it before taking the strings off make sure when you restring it you give the neck time to settle.

Did you measure the string heights at the nut?

Thats why you keep all the shims in the case from day one.
This leads to the 2nd lesson of Setup 101.
Some players like thick strings, some dont.Basic math.
Add,remove shims to fit YOUR needs.
Play.
