I'll be headed to the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area Monday and will be there till Saturday, then off to Boston to watch my oldest graduate from Boston U (with honors!).

Was looking for suggestions on places to go and things to do...

And of course any must stop at music stores!

Are you driving from VA to MA and how much time you have in each place. You could easily spend weeks in either of those places and not see everything, not to mention the plethora of places in between.

Besides Music Stores (and there are still a few historic ones to see) what else is of interest.

Just for a "by the way" New Hartford is only 2.5 hours from Boston.

2.5 hrs really? I'd love to check out the factory!

I'll be getting into Virginia Monday evening and leaving Saturday morning by plane for Boston. I leave Boston Tuesday eve. Nick's commencement is on Sunday.

Historic sites are probably #1 for me. I've always wanted to visit Boston. I've been to Virginia Beach before. I do believe we're gonna go check out Williamsburg/Jamestown on one of the days there. Last time I didn't do much except the beach (and played an open mic too)

As you have limited time in Boston, I'll start there... There is a "trolley buss" tour around Boston. For a fee, you can get on and off at any stop all day. The drivers are comics, and there are a couple that will really have you rolling in the isle and also learning about Boston.

If you have time....

A tourist must is Quincy Market. Much like Pike Place, but all about Boston.

Newbury Street is all the ritzy crazy boutique shops.

Boston Common - you've heard some of us reference it as the place to go busking, but it's also a nice park and any tourist map will show you all the things to do within walking distance of there.

Finally-ish, if it's a nice day you can go to the Prudential Center and go up to the roof and look around. The restaurant is pricey but good, in fact the best meal I have ever had was there (story for another time).

There was a Dick's Hide-Away at the bottom of the Prudential Center. It's a hoot with good food and good prices. The staff are all comics. There is a touristy restaurant in the market where you will get insulted and made to do funny things for your food, but that was more a touristy place... I think Dick's, although along the same line... is more fun, more for locals.

Go for a ride on the T (metro underground train). Just go someplace on the T while you are there. If you can catch one of the last runs, especially after a night of drinking.. all the better !!!!

Bottom Line... there's a ton to do in Boston, but some of the most fun is just make a plan to do something... anything.. and head out. You likely won't end up doing what you planned, but you'll end up doing something fun, likely MORE fun than you actually planned. If you can't tell, it's my favorite city and the only place I'd consider crossing the Cascades ever again to see.

As far as New Hartford, it is 2.5 hours. Depending on traffic maybe 3. Google the directions and you'll see it's a pretty straight shot. I bet they'd love to meet you as well.

+1 on Quincy Market

Also, the Boston Aquarium is nice.

For a good bite to eat, you can visit a place called the Black Rose (it's been a while since I've been to Boston so you might want to check first to see if it is still there).

Congrats, Damon. Who'd a thought we would have smart kids? A year ago we attended our youngest's graduation. That's even better. I'll bet there will be a bunch of commencement activities to attend. Being introduced as "my Dad" was quite a head trip.
BTW, the rep for FOTO emailed me yesterday to have me pass along thanks for the concert. She thought you guys were really good.

Yeah Mark, who'da thunk. He's graduating Magna Cum Laude. Science even. Genetic engineering no less.

Didn't get it from me and for sure didn't get it from his mother.

CL, last time I was in Tidewater I tried to get together with Tim. I think it was last Memorial Day and he takes his boat out on that holiday annually. Maybe this time. I'd love to pilfer through his stuff. He has some sweet Adami

Mr. O, thanks. That's a start for sure. I like the idea of the Market and taking the trolley. I'll be on a budget so Dick's sounds like the place to hit over the other.

I'd like to make it up to the MS, but we'll see. I wasn't planning on renting a car. I might have to rent one for a day.

Too bad you're not going to be there this weekend. The Red Sox are home against the Yankees and just hanging around the Fenway neighborhood is worth the trolley fare.

Damon,
If you decide to come down to visit the factory contact me. I'm only 35 miles away(55 mins) and assumming you would come down either 90w to 91s or90w to 84 w We could meet up and I could get you there. I'd be pretty much free any day as I'm currently not working.

If you do get a car, about 30 min NW of Boston is Lexington (yes, of the Revolutionary War, lots of historical sites), also home of The Music Emporium, one of the the best high-end guitar stores in the country. From there it's an easy shot on the interstates to New Hartford.
