Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | Christiane has a nice Strat copy with a weird noise coming from the bass E. Doesn't matter if it's open or fretted. It almost sounds like one of those weird space alien effects, but it does this unplugged! Neck is straight, I checked the nut height and even tried stuffing some paper under the string at the nut. I figured it must be the string itself so I put a new one on. It's still making the noise on every note, all the way up the neck. It isn't touching the pickups. Can't find anything loose that might be rattling. I'm stymied. Woody? Miles? Any ideas? |

Location: NJ | hit the string and start pressing on parts of the guitar trying to isolate the noise and make it go away.
start with the tuning machine and headstock and work your way down.
it may be a busted truss rod |

Location: NW Washington State | Maybe "Strat-itis" where the magnetic pull of the pickups produces a warble? Try adjusting the pickups down, well away from the E string, and see if it changes.

Only the Bass E has enough mass to elicit the effect.
Non plugged in as well as plugged in.
Not the Nut height.
Theory - Like Al says, something else is vibrating along with the low E.
Suspects include:
Truss Rod broken or too loose.
Pickguard is loose
Spring on a Pickup is loose.
Output Jack is loose.
Vol/Tone Knob is loose.
Loose nut behind the Keyboard... :D |

Location: Caribou, ME | Stratitis was my first guess but also look for a burr or flaw in the saddle. Depending on the saddle, the string could be rubbing against one of the height adjustment screws too.
Long shot, but check the tremolo springs too. |

Location: San Bernardino, California | Check the height adjustment screws on the saddle. If one is not quite touching the bridge plate you'll get a vibration.
Check the 'A' string saddle as well. If there's enough tilt the saddles will vibrate against each other. |
