[Sigh] I didn't buy it.

After reviewing the finances with my better half, I couldn't justify the purchase.

I do hold out a bit of hope that she's completely scamming me and I'll get it as a surprise birthday present in August.

But I'm not holding my breath. :(

Better halves can be a buzz kill, especially when it comes to buying a new guitar. I've found it's best to ask forgiveness than permission.

Once you've mastered this technique, we'll be able to graduate your screen name to "scooterman"

Ok, that stung. A little. :p

I am getting a vibe tonight that it may end up mine though. Just maybe.

How's this sound scooterboy...

You give ME the contact info on the guitar, right?

Then I'll see if the guy's still got it for SALE!

If he does? Then the better half isn't buying it and I am! hahahaa!

Otherwise...all the best!

Scooter, I hope you know I was just havin' fun at your expense.

If you want to stay married, it's best not taking advice from a divorced guy anyway.

Well now I know why my wife told me we really shouldn't spend the money on this Breadwinner when I first started this thread.

She, along with my mother, brother, and sister all chipped in and got it for me as an early birthday present.

My birthday isn't until August, but we had a cookout for the whole family at our house today and they couldn't wait any longer so they surprised me with it today. And I was surprised!

It's gorgeous. It has only a couple of VERY small barely noticable nicks in it, so I'd say it was near-near-near mint. :)

It seems the owner of the store bought a lot of guitar CASES from someone and when he picked up one of the Ovation cases he thought it felt kind of heavy. So he opened it up and found a very-little-used black breadwinner inside. The case is nearly as pristine as the guitar.

Here's a picture of it from the website of the store:

Nylon saddles, toroidal pickups, cable jack on the pickguard. Original electronics seem to work fine, but I'll probably replace the batteries anyway. Serial E1990. I think that would place it around early 1973? Does that sound right?

I'm still in shock. It plays like a dream and I don't even know how old the strings are. I'm going to replace them tomorrow and clean it up while the strings are off (not that it needs much cleaning). What should I use to clean the fretboard and the pickguard?

I'll take some pictures of my own after the restringing and show it off. What a great day!

Thanks! I know I have the 0000 steel wool - I just need to see if I have some lemon oil.

Wow... what a treasure story.
Guys buys a bunch of cases and finds a vintage guitar in one of them.
'73 might be about right. Looks like they had already moved the input jack but were still using the first generation pick-up and bridge material.

Just to clarify - he didn't buy a bunch of cases and then find the guitar in one of them. He found it while buying them and he did pay for the guitar as well as the cases.

And yeah, my wife is pretty cool. I'll be keeping both her and the breadwinner for life. :)
