Yesterday, June 3rd, baseball was the top story of the day with the news media filled with stories about Armando Galarraga's "almost perfect" game.

On June 3, 1888, the San Francisco Examiner first published Ernest Lawrence Thayer's poem, Casey at the Bat.

Coincidence or fate?

I don't want to talk about it.
I'm not bitter or angry... but I'm not real happy about it either.

Ah, don't feel bad for him. The American taxpayers just gave him a brand new Corvette. Is this a great country or what?

This is the most 'class' smile ever in baseball...

Government Motors gave him a new Corvette...

So... you pitch a perfect game, all you get is your name in the record books. You pitch a NEAR perfect game, you get a car?

It's pure PR on the part of GM. Maybe they'll get a sales boost out of it in the short term. At least the guy seems to be a class act. He certainly handled the blown call with grace and poise.

This was smart, cheap advertising for GM. The cost of the car to GM had to be less than 1% of what they would have paid for similar ad time. Sort of like giving a famous performer a USA made Ovation to play right in the middle of a performance that the whole country is watching.

Ever since the Comerica opened GM had advertised above the scoreboard. Last season they could not do that. So, last year in its place Tiger ownership installed signs for Chrysler, Ford & GM at no charge just to show support for the area.
.
Soon enough GM will be back on it's own with the loan paid back with interest.
.
It seems like much of the country has sour view of Detroit. I did not like to see the loan happen either. But I am much less pleased with the bailouts handed out to others.

Sad to say that it took this type of crisis to fix some long standing problems with the industry. Labor rates for future hires have been more than halved. GM & Ford will be playing on a more even playing field with the overseas makers.
For the near future that means that a force that has historicaly driven much of the economy will have much less to contribute. But I'm confident that over time water will seek its own level and we will have a "new normal" that will look pretty good.

That said.... I've skirted the rules here long enough. PM me if you wish.

Overseas manufacturers. That's funny.

Nissan, Honda and Toyota produce as many cars in the US if not MORE than Ford (Mexico) Chevrolet and CHrysler (Canada) NOT including the poarts and sub assemblied made all over the world.

I think they should all get Ovations...

They already get "standing" Ovations, why not playable ones?
