Joined: September 2002 Posts: 806 Location: Seymour, Tennessee | I am thinking about getting one of these in the next month or two for my Son as he's showing that he may just keep going with the guitar playing (I'm so proud!). At some point down the road, he will get a nicer Ovation, either one of mine (if I can actually art with any of them) or a "new" one from here on the board. I'd appreciate some feedback on these things, are they worth buying, do they sound decent, etc. I think he'd be able to utilize the recording and other feature the on-board electronics offer. If the general concensus is they aren't worth the money, I'll just find him something decent in a nice older USA-made A/E. Thanks in advance, Michael

It allows the flexibility to try ideas (no pun intended) without the overhead of having to go to the DAW. When I have something I want to keep I can export it.... when I have something to practice I can import to the guitar (jam tracks or drum loops ect). See ideafordummies.com. created by one of the OFC members and is a valuable resource.

These are a decent playing/sounding guitar and though I have found them to be a bit inconsistent from one to the next (we have two here to compare...), I would highly recommend them. For your needs... this is the one to go with!!

The iDea is great for several tasks, from recording ideas to recording songs (using the built in mic) to having a backing track to play with to using the lessons. Sara doesn't really use her iDea much at all. She is the typical teen as far as being a tech wiz, but the iDea hasn't grabbed her. It is in her red flame T which she played endlessly before getting the Ute. She was more interested in recording videos on her laptop (in reversed left-to-right for some strange reason) than recording on the iDea. If you think that your son will probably use the iDea, think about getting the whole guitar from Al. His price in the recent newsletter is pretty much what you'd pay for the iDea module alone.

I personally don't use it so much to capture "ideas" and those spur of the moment gems that otherwise get lost. My two biggest uses are to just record a backing rhythm guitar 8 bar and then put on repeat and just play licks over and over again. The other use is to just load it up with regular MP3's and take it somplace to just "play along" with my favorite tunes. Heck, you cold load it up with one of the OFC CDs and the go play along with your fellow OFC members just like an OFC Gathering. Overall personally I think the iDea preamp is one the best things that Ovation every came up with.

I think I'm going to go ahead and get him one probably in the next paycheck or two as an early Birthday present (He'll be 13 in Oct). I e-mailed Al for a price, I accidentally trashed the newsletter and I really didn't pay much attention to anything on there about an Idea, wasn't considering one then. Just have to fgure out if Brandon wants a silver one or a black one :) Thanks again everybody!
