O sighting

Saturday last we went to see The Pat Metheny Group here in London. They haven't played together for 5 years or more and with no album to promote they are doing The Songbook Tour - fantastic evening of the classic 80s/90s material. True to the spirit of the evening half way through out came the battered and beautiful Ovation Classical that he toured with for over twenty years. Ten minute solo playing fingerstyle and picking then a long piece with the drums, bass and piano slowly joining in. Stunningly beautiful - the amplified tone of the O with just a little reverb and echo was breathtaking. You could have heard a pin drop at the end of the piece before the place erupted. On the way out we heard several people talking about the acoustic piece and the beautiful sound.

Interesting point for the live performers - the concert was in London's premier classical/Jazz theatre and they have a fantastic house sound system, but for this gig they turned up with four Bose L-whatever set ups. The sound was excellent and easily filled a 1500 seat auditorium (admittedly with the best acoustics I've ever heard in any theatre). I'd only heard Temp's band play a full gig with a Bose set-up before. Really seems to work well no matter how quiet/loud you play and whatever the shape of the room.

Isn't it nice to go to a concert and actually hear the notes and words? I am so tired of these sound guys who think they need to amplify the bass and drums to the detriment of the vocals and melody. I know I'm old, but I felt the same way when I was young and many of you weren't born. My hearing is also still good, no thanks to the last few concerts.
Listening to Craig Caruthers in a book store with 50 people is my idea of a great concert.

Because they grew up using stereos with "loudness" buttons...
