I gather that in the states, they were the multi-sound hole variety.
I don't have any of the other details ('cause I'm at work now), but I do have a COA, and know that the serial # is something in the 400's. |

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | There are more Elite style 01C's than center hole models, but both were indeed made.
Aside from the stunning aesthetics of figured redwood, it's tone is equally impressive. I have an 01C Elite-style, and have argued in the past that it will eventually gain a reputation as one of the BEST acoustic sounding Ovations ever built regardless of the mid-depth bowl. Here's my comparison of the 01 with an 87C and a 1537.
Comparing A to B to C
I haven't heard the center hole 01C, but that time will likely come some day.
The 01C firmly planted redwood in my mind as my favorite tonewood. (Not that I'm averse to other tonewoods, but redwood just rings all my bells.) I am so enamored with it that I've had the factory cobble together a full-bodied Elite from a damaged 1537 and my recently acquired 1713-X Nylon String both of which further demonstrate that redwood sounds every bit as good as it looks.

I fell in love with the look first, then the sound. I can't imagine a more beautiful looking guitar. The redwood, the gold tuners, the neck. The black and gold on the headstock is just beautiful. It's just gorgeous to look at.
The sound is wonderful. Definitely not bassy, but the mids are bright even with less bright strings. I made the "mistake" of putting light DR's -- bright strings -- on it. Turned out to be just fine. The sound ended up being just really bright. I LIKE really bright. I make songs that consist of, for lack of a better way to describe it, "guitar layers," and I often use the 2001 CE to cover the high ends.
Oh, the reason for the lights? Someone once told me that the '01CE's have a tendency to pop their bridge. Ouch! So, I figured I'd lighten the load on the bridge just a bit.
Anyway, sometimes I take it out just to look at it. If you've looked at it up close, you know that up close the redwood practically looks like an optical illusion. It looks like deep red waves, or ripples or something of the sort. Whatever it is, it's just plain stunning.
Patch, your redwoods show all that beautifully. My '01CE looks just like yours, only with the center hole. Oh, and my serial # is 530.

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | I've heard similar stories about top integrity, so my RW steel strings tend to stay tuned to open-D, but get brought up to full pitch when necessary.
