So... Jeff and I took the plunge and have a few rough cuts to show for it: Black 1581 (left channel) v. Red Custom Legend (right). For now we are recording our original tunes:

Tamboura

and Black Adamas

Wow! Just beautiful. Absolutely world class playing and wonderful production values.

You mentioned this is just a "first draft," and I CAN hear what sound like small and very few extraneous noises sprinkled about the recording...nothing definitely identifiable, more like rumbling, and nothing that harms the recording irreparably...But this is just wonderful playing, and great sound quality.

And GREAT sound from those beautiful guitars! When the entire CD comes out I want to buy the first one!

I know this review isn't all that useful, 'cause I'm a fan, but fan mail is good too, right?

Thanks for taking the time to sample and give feedback. I really appreciate it.

The day comes with a story: Our engineer (a Zen 35-year vet of the business here in Chicago) was initially skeptical of the Ovations and of us. He suggested we try his Martin and, probably need a click track etc. When we started, however, he changed his attitude very quickly. The Adamas was put in front of a (single) ribbon mic, while Jeff (in another room) was seated before a MASSIVE "bullet" -looking antiquity. I believe the virtues of both (Adamas and wood-top Legend) are nicely represented.

Beautiful.
I didn't pick up on any of the extraneous noises.
There again I'm tone deaf.

A click track would have killed both songs. Some things you have to feel, not count. As anybody who ever heard Mingus play a bass solo live will tell you.

Great stuff boys.

I think Alan has a point: but some clams and extraneous noises are inevitable. Tamboura will pretty much go as is (spots in my solo need to be scrubbed, a few spots synched). "Black Adamas," on the other hand, will be "comped" from several takes, and of course, the burrito.

Two in the can: about 7-8 more to go!
