Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | Does anyone know if there is software "out there" that will produce written music when used with a recording device??? I know it may be a dumb question, but I have been know to do that on occasion, and I make no appologies for being who I am. |

Location: Utah | You mean like listen to what you play and transcribe it? You may need something that will give a MIDI output to make that work.
My son uses Finale Printmusic which will take a MIDI input and transcribe that. He doesn't use that feature, but the rest of the program is superb for the composer and arranger. It has a guitar and bass tab function which I have used. |

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba CANADA | I have a program (somewhere on disc, name escapes me... will have a look for it) that converts audio to MIDI, then you can use anything to transcribe it (the market is loaded with transcribing software at all price points... I use LOGIC 9 for that myself).
I found that although it does give a somewhat representative view of the music it hears, it is far from an accurate transcription. I doubt anything will be able to accurately score from a stereo multi-instrument recording. If you are just looking for something to transcribe a single guitar track, it would probably do that well enough. |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | Looks like transcription is what I'm looking for, but it would be nice to have something that would take my recorded input and allow me to print music score AND the words out on sheet music. I would find it hard to believe there isn't something out there to do it, but it probably would cost an arm and a leg. |

So I did a search under music writing software and found THIS site, which looks like a good starting point for my research. ... It doesn't appear to be as expensive as I thought it would:

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba CANADA | Apparently there is a new application (for the Mac) that will allow you to remove only a certain target instrument from a stereo mix. This would allow you to 'eq out', say a trumpet or bass guitar.
If the technology to 'hear' a specific instrument in the mix has come this far (this is a pretty complicated thing to do requiring LOTS of raw data crunching...), I don't think it will be too long before there actually is an app that will accurately score a single instrument out of a stereo track.

Sounds like it could be really handy removing bad parts (no shortage of those...) or just taking out everything you DIDN'T want in your score.

Location: SW Washington | I use Finale (the full blown version) and it writes the score for you as you play on a midi keyboard and presumably it would do the same if you have a guitar equipped with midi. I don't use this particular feature but I have messed around with it some and it seems to work very well. I use Finale daily for my orchestrations and arrangements and I have heard Sibelius is very good too but I don't have any extra $$$ to try it and find out. |
