Definitely like the look of outies better than the typical 'innies' ones (I've got a standard issue red one myself... :( ). And the photos (as always) are beautiful!!

Is this a different model entirely perhaps, than the usual ones that can be found on EBay (MM68's)? The look of this one actually seems to have more in common with the B78 Acoustic Bass than any of the mandolins I have seen? An MM78?

I looked at probably a 100 of these in the lead up to buying mine and I never saw one with outties, then just now I looked high and low for a picture of one with innies (to show the difference...) and every single example of a new in-store MM68 I could find was like yours? I guess they've changed the spec and all the innies ones (old stock) are gone. They were probably harder to make and the look wasn't as dramatic as the outties ones anyway. Hmm, maybe they'll be collectible... in 20 years? :D

Wanna trade? :D Last year a book mando popped up, but I wasn't quick enough at the trigger. Actually, I was still unemployed too. You are correct though. The -5 is like new. There isn't even any dust or crud in the corners of the preamp. It's a nice specimen.

Wanna trade? :D I've seen several natural finish -68s recently, but I would really love a black one. I had just put my Book mando back in its case last week at church when an out-of-control gear cascade took out the top of my 01C. That's the first time in nearly 30 years of playing that something like that has happened, but as upset as I was, I was certainly glad I had put the mando away first and not the guitar. ;) I'll track down something eventually.

There were so many of these available on EBay six months ago, near on unbelieveable one can't be found anywhere now... http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w124/Avatar4550/03.jpg Still prefer the 'outies' (why didn't they make them that way in the first place?), but Mandy does the job, so I can't really complain.

What we've always referred to around here as "innies" are the epaulets that arc inward, the original Adamas design: Whereas "outies" are epaulets that make sort of an "S" shape with the bottom-most portion curving outward: (Images courtesy of Jerome's site) I think what you're referring to as "innies", now that I see the picture of your mando, are epaulets that are fully inlaid into and flush with the top, versus overlaid and just proud of the soundboard. The inlaid epaulets are relatively recent, and were introduced with a new CNC process on one of the Collector's series (I forget which one).

I thought there must have been something amiss, as these inlaid (and NOT innie) ones were so common. Now that you've pointed it out, I can't really say I have noticed the outwardly turned epaulets before. I guess when you look at so many Adami, it all just goes blurry after a while... Very good to know and I will definitely be looking more closely in future. :o

The only time I have ever heard the expression 'innie/outie' used was in relation to people's navels... ie. sticking up or turned in. It didn't even occur to me that you were referring to whether the inlays were pointing up or down. Just another example of knowing only half as much as you think you do and about a quarter of what you actually need to. Not the first time I've lost the plot... and definitely won't be the last, but when someone refers to an innie now... :o :o :o
