I was fully intending on buying the Collings, and took my CEO along to do an A/B so I knew where it stood. If I would have just gone there and played the Collings, I would have bought it. But after the comparo, I decided it wasn't any better at all, much less to spend 3k. This brings up an interesting point: Do you all think I am just "attuned" to the Martin sound so much that I think the Collings was inferior? (may be a bad choice of words) Actually, I think the Collings sounded remarkably like the CA GX. More midrange than the Martin. On a side note, the gentleman who is selling these had been to Newport and ordered two VERY expensive units, hence the sell off of these. But, he was keeping one guitar of the 5 in the room,.. a Martin OM. I felt the Bourgeois OM (Adirondack top) was the best sound of the other three, with the Collings OM (also an Ad top) coming in close 2nd and the Weber Roundbody (Coco bolo body with Engleman top) a distant 3rd.

The one I bought was a little more than that, but it's in almost un- played condition. From what I understand, there aren't many of these around (S 17) and the Mahog is getting more scarce.I just saw one of these on our local Craigslist last night. $1200 Dunno if that's a good or bad price, but if anyone wants it I'll play go between if I get a chance to play it for a night before shipping :D

For me, the Collings are a tad more "crisp" than the Martins that I have owned and I prefer the Collings sound. Course, were just pickin at the fleas cause without a side by side comparison, most of us would be more than happy with either.
