Hi,

woohoo got my 6778LX and frist impressions are a mixed bag...

It feels SOOO new and SOOO shiney it doesn't feel anything like my lived in Elite Special.

Also the factory setup which I believe is done for a wide variety of players seems to have left the action VERY high, gonna have a stab at removing 2 shims to see if that helps.

Not too sure if I ought to adjust the neck will wait to see what the shim removal does.

It certainly is extremely well made and for £300...

It's hard to really describe the difference really its like the Special is soft, warm, woody, inviting, organic, open feel whilst the LX (at the moment) is a bit hard and cold. I think it needs some serious 'loving'.

The '84 Collectors will arrive hopefully tomorrow and I'm hoping that will have a more similar feel to the Special.

Dweezil, I've had 2 of these and a friend currently has one, and they've all been very nice guitars.
A brand new Ovation will rarely sound like one that has been played for 20 years, but it will open up given a little time and a bunch of playing.

Removed 2 shims and getting buzzing so added one back in. The action is a little better though not as low as I would like it.

Yeah I'm certain you are right about taking some time to open up.

With 1 shim removed the action is still horrid :-(

Update: removed another shim (down to one now) and tuned up fully, no buzz, nice action. Yee-haa!

What are the string gauges on new Elites? I suspect they are a 12....

Yup ... 12-52

All new guitars need to acquire that lived-in feel. Glad it's working out. Enjoy your visit to this side of the pond!

I'm curious to hear your thoughts when you get it. I forgot to tell you that I put new D'Addario lights on it before I shipped it. It's a great guitar.

My son has the 6778LX and it's a great guitar. I does sound different than an older A or Elite braced Ovation. I put some air locks on the lower/treble side epaulet holes and that improved the bass. Strings are a personal thing, but I really like the Elixir Custom Light Nano (.011-.052) for sound quality and ease of playing.

Ditto, I have lower holes blocked, but I use Dean Markley Alchemy Custom Lights

BTW, I recommend keeping newer strings on these as much as possible.

Here's the thing...

this week bought a 6778LX for $600 and a 1984 Collectors for $699 (from Patch).

The LX is a lovely guitarr but the '84 is quite frankly a F****** awesome guitar!

Patch, you said I would like it, you were so wrong! I **LOVE* it, WOW!

As soon as I get back to the UK the LX goes on Ebay. As I say the LX is great but I will never play it, the 84 is that good.

So Patch if thats the best SSB they did then my O fix is sated. Thanks for curing me. Yes the 84 is like the Elite Special but REALLY special, damn it's good...

Awww shucks Dweezil, c'mon, tell us how you really feel! :D

Seriously, I'm glad you like it. There's a reason I intend to add one to my signature line someday. (BTW, I think yours looks much improved over yesterday. ;) ) I'm always scared to death that I may have missed something in my inspection or something, and I pride myself on an honest reputation. This past year, I've been forced to move several that I intended to keep, but that doesn't mean I've forgotten how good they were. I'm patient...well sort of...I can wait...because I have little choice anyway.

Speaking of which...I'm still trying to move my like new Country Artist LX. Anybody?

Crumbs! I missed it! I've never tried to fix a nick. Can they be filled...DIY I mean? I know the mothership can do it, but not before you head home.

Patch,

removed the last shim, and oiled the fretboard, woah that thing is a beauty. Just trying to find out the best stain for the bridge.

Back home now (the '84 was tended to by the flight crew) and the LX survived the trip in the hold but I don't think it will survive the comparison to the 84. It is Ebay bound...

Glad it, and you, made it home safe. Here's what Kim says to use.

Been play the Os today and having three is pretty neat, have the Special tuned to Open E and the LX and 84 to DADGAD.

I must say I'm warming to the LX, it might just not make it to Ebay.

Hey dweezil,

All that is is Fiebing's leather dye.....used for dying saddles (among other things)

Check with some places near you that deal with horses or tack....This place in the UK has a full line of Fiebings
Abbey Saddlery

....be careful with it though....It'll get in/on EVERYTHING!!! DAMHIKT
