Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | About a month a go I did a short set at the Overflowing Cup, a Christian Coffee House-type program held every month here in Poughkeepsie. It's pretty much amateur hour, but fun nonetheless. I like to take my Zoom H4 recorder just to see how I sound and maybe keep something different for my kids. But sometimes the recording gremlins just have it in for you.
When my turn up came, the regular sound guy had just left to run an unexpected errand, and no one else was sure how to get me plugged in and set levels, etc. This is exacerbated by the lack of monitors, so I just have to trust for the best.
As it turns out, my mic was dead. Additionally, some moron (that would be me) had failed to notice the refrigerating unit right next to where I had set up my recorder.
Suffice to say, I'm hard to hear.
But the person before me had closed with, of all things, Michael Row the Boat Ashore. This provided the perfect story to start my set with.
So here it is, no music, just a short bit of off-the-cuff improv to set the tone for my set. And every bit is true, give or take a lie or two.

As he told it to me, it was just a few college buddies making a recording pretty much as a lark and none of them had any dream whatsoever that it would be popular. |

Looks like Brad and I have only a couple degrees of separation. |

I went to school with the wife of Bob Burnette of the Highwaymen, who presumably knew this Steve guy, who you know. So I'm separated from you guys by what? Four degrees? |
