Hey all,

Due to unusual circumstances, I'm being asked to ship a guitar in a soft-shell case. I'm wondering:

1) Is it even realistic for the guitar to show up at its destination unharmed? It's traveling about 150 miles.

2) If it's realistic that it could travel unscathed, what would be the ideal way to ship it?

Thanks a ton in advance.

150 miles??? You drive an hour, he drives and hour, meet in the middle and you're done. Have him give you $25 for gas.

If it were that simple, I would have done it, trust me :)

My guess is that it's not safe to do, whichever way you slice it, was just looking for some confirmation on that thought.

Just prop up on the sidewalk with the address written on it. It's just as likely to make it and you'll save the shipping.

Nothing but a gig bag? I've had guitars shipped to me in gig bags, but they were inside standard shipping boxes. Arrived no problem.

You could try going to a guitar store and get a used shipping box, pack the life out of it, then use snail mail. I know US mail is slower, but you can insure it, and since there is a weight limit on US mail, you don't have a 100lb box sitting on top of yours. Just a thought.

This is what I'm thinking is the best way.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions, all :) much appreciated, as always!

+1 on Kitmann's advice. There's also a big difference between a lightly padded gig bag with no structural protection versus a nylon covered hard foam case like Ovation's TKL-made case that provides good structural protection. Both are referred to as gig bags. Which type are you planning to use?

I sent a guitar without a case at all. I padded it with bubble wrap, put it in a small guitar box and then put that box (surrounded by padding) in a large Ovation box. It arrived in pristine condition.

I have had several guitars shipped to me by the method TAFKAR mentioned, that were unscathed.

If you have a guitar center nearby, I think Wednesday is their receiving day and if you drop in prior to that and ask for a guitar box, they will put one back for you, before they break them down.

I'd be really hesitant to ship in a soft shell case. I've had a few items not handled with care despite the handle with care stickers. Any alternative to better protect would be well worth it.

I've been using the UPS store in Manchester on South Willow. Don't know where in NH you are, but they do a great job. Since they do the packing you will get no questions if you need to file a claim later. I recommend them highly.
