I've never had a re-build go so totally wonky! But it should be worth the wait.

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent		I had a long talk with John Budny this AM, and I can't sit still or wait patiently for the long-anticipated arrival of the lately lamented Custom 1768 that got damaged in shipping. This was a super nice guitar that I sold under duress and eventually led to the cessation of relations between me and United Parcel Smashers.

This was what the guitar used to look like before its ill-fated trip across the county....





Anyway.....

Some have noted that I've been horsetrading time and again to be ready for the bill on this critter. For reasons out of my control, this project got delayed several times. No harm, no foul. And in a weird kind of way, it eventually worked to my benefit as the folks at Ovation have an obvious sense of fair play and felt bad about the delays.

This morning's conversation came about because of one of my modifications. When I got it back to New Hartford, I asked that it receive numerous customizations, one of which was a hand-laid bowl. John and I both completely missed the detail that the neck we were using from the 1768 was not the best match for the HLF bowl, which typically uses and Adamas neck with a dove tail. (I think I've got the details of that more-or-less straight.) So John asked if I wanted to make it fit or use an Adamas II neck he has handy.

John has also been going on about how awesome this guitar looks already.

Well now it's going to look even more awesome with an Adamas neck AND carved bridge!

The guitar is going to be nothing like the original was now. But it's going to be stunning! And John says it should be done next week! (Please, oh please, oh please!) :cool:

And one final thought: I still have that beautiful, bound, rosewood, and abalone-bordered neck from the 1768. I'm not positive what we're going to do with that yet, but despite my patently runaway imagination, I had the presence of mind to ask John if he had any nice Koa left.

He said he'd check and see. ;)

Location: SoCal		If you're going with a hand laid bowl, that would also mean a different top. Now if you put a different neck on it, wouldn't that make it a different guitar?

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent		When I drove away from the factory early last spring after I dropped it off, it was just going to be a new top and bowl. But circumstances conspired in such a way that it didn't quite work out as planned.

So you're right, it is basically a new guitar. Though my original ideas were wrapped around that very unusual neck from the 1768.

So now we start again, with the same neck.. A new top once more but this time with a new standard bowl so the neck attachment issue doesn't crop up again.

Like I said, it worked out to my benefit in the end. :)

Patch... Are there any original parts still on this project?

The original top got busted in shipping. I was going to use the original neck with a new, different topwood and bowl.

As far as original parts go now?

John joked that he could still put on the origianl strap buttons if I wanted.... :rolleyes:
