Watched the Americana Music Awards last week on PBS. Some good music from some very talented people - Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Lucinda Williams, The Avett Bros, Greg Allman and others. What I found most interesting though -- we are all use to seeing Ovation, Takamines and still some Martins in the hands of the country and country rock folks. That night all I saw was maybe one Martin and a bunch of Gibsons! I was surprised. So I guess the establishment plays Taks & O's, but the fringe plays Gibbys. LOL! Oh---All the electrics appeared to be Guilds.

When I see such profound trends it makes me think that it was just marketing. Likely no one was forced to play a particular instrument, but rather one of the larger distributors was there at rehearsals and offered up models for artists to use. I have even seen this at the local level where a music store will supply the gear for an event to get their name in the brochure and on the banner. From the artists perspective, unless they have an instrument that they are identified with, why not? In those venues it's not really like tone matters that much. It needs to be playable and sound good... and there are a lot of guitars that fit that description.

Not your own gig, all that gear going on and off stage....too much opportunity to lose a favourite. Yeah, I'd play what was at the gig.

I've done that (albeit in a much less prestigious venue) and announced; "I was offered this to play, it's a Take-Mine guitar!"
