Takes me back to my days of a fusion guitarist wannabe... I saw Mahavishnu Orchestra 35 years ago on a tour in which Aerosmith was the opener. Go figure...
Had great seats to see The Police last week, too. They played a terrific show. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I just got tix for the Phoenix show. It's a great venue. I went via a ticket broker and got 8th row seats. 3x face value, but this is a really special opportunity so, what the hell. We're grilling hotdogs for Memorial Day instead of steak.

Location: Minden, Nebraska | Saw RTF's Omaha performance last night. It was a three hour show including a short intermission. All without a single lyric being sung. The band was very tight, looked to be having fun, the sound was superb (lack of lowend articulation for Clarke's Alembic being the exception), and I got more than my money's worth for tickets in the center, 14 rows back, in a beautiful venue.
They each took turns with a mic at times thanking the audience for supporting them. Lenny White spoke on how amazing it is that there are so many fans for a band with no lyrics, no singers, no rapping. He added that in a day when 'boy bands' are popular, "this is a man band."
These guys are monster players and each got to highlight their skills. Chick Corea did a couple of solo pieces that showcased not only his fine work as a composer but what an amazing technical player he is.
The second set was dedicated to Miles Davis, and Clarke played his standup bass for most of it, using a bow on a couple of the pieces. His overall effect was a reminder of why he is one of the most influential of bassists of the era.
Dimeola started off with his Les Paul, and that was his primary 'shredder' guitar, but he also used a couple of PRS guitars. The second set was opened by two of his solo compositions on nylon string, and I couldn't tell the make of the guitar. Then his tech brought out his AD Signature which he used until the encores (and he played the heck out of it, from the highest frets to the lowest). The first encore featured the Les Paul, and on the second he used a doubleneck that sounded like it was a synth guitar. The fire that set him apart when he replaced Bill Connors was burning bright last night.
Lenny White was always one of my favorite drummers. He listens so well to the rest of the band and plays to serve the music, but he's as good as it gets for laying down groove and is a powerhouse when called for.
It was a memorable night with great seats for a great show I'll never forget. Bands like this don't come around very often. |

Mark, where did you see a Portland show? I'm not seeing anything on the West Coast. I don't see the Phoenix show either.

Location: SoCal | I saw Al in the mid 70's in Austin Tx. I learned then that while he's a great guitar player, for me, he's best appreciated in small doses. I don't think I've ever listened to the cd we got a few years ago at one of the gatherings -- at least not all the way thru..... |

Location: Chicago | I would add that I, too, like Al most when he is on ACOUSTIC and playing with Chick. My favorite sound in that regard is the Ovation-plus-acoustic piano (Like "Short Tales", "No Mystery" or "Romantic Warrior). |

I'm looking forward to the 8/7 show in NYC. They recently added another show the next night, 8/8. For those in the area, there might be tix still available for that.
I've been a big Al DiMeola fan for a long time. The best acoustic show I've ever seen was the McLoughlin, DiMeola, Delucia tour with Steve Morse as a guest.

Location: Carle Place, NY | I went to the concert last night and was awestruck. It's unbelievable how all 4 of these guys have gotten even better than they were decades ago. Perfect sound in a absolutely stunning venue. We were sitting 3 rows behing the sound/lighting engineers. Kareem Abdul Jabar was sitting two rows in front of us.
For anyone in the NYC area, these's another show tonight. Last night there were over a dozen people trying to unload tickets in front of the theater. If you just go to the theater at 175th and Broadway 30 minute before the show you'll be able to get a ticket for proabably less than face value.
This was the best concert I've seen in a long, long time. The sound quality was amazing. Each insturment was clearly articulated and the overall sound volume never got loud. Chick, Al and Stanley are absolute virtuoso masters at their craft. Stanley Clarke's solo on the stand-up bass was beyond description. He played with his fingers but was able to get violin tones with his vibrato technique. At one point he played it with flamenco style strumming followed by percussive slapping on the strings and top. Al DiMeola plays so fast that his fingers were a blur. Chick Corea was outstanding an he is a true compositional genius.

They are very good... Kinda Jazz fusion stuff that defies classification... |

As Lenny White said as he pattered out to the audience between songs, this was a special evening. "Music like this is hard to find. Most of the industry is chasing after all the boy bands. These are Man Bands!"
Excellent as expected. Tight. Both bands were ON. And they all played like the good old days, when you got paid by the note so you played lots of 'em! |
