OK ... so I'm stuck. I have too many guitars and not enough room. I can't decide which guitars should go. I walked through the collection with lady stonebobbo and she was no help at all ... she said I ought to keep them all. But I don't have enough space to keep what I have so I figured I would turn to the educated masses here to give me the straight story. I'm limiting this list to only the Ovations ... I've already decided to keep the Taks, Martin, Cole Clark, Lakewood, Adamas, and all of the other electrics and basses.

So, in no particular order:

--1968/9 1117-4. A Legend before there was a Legend. Bound neck, winged walnut bridge, dots and diamonds ebony fretboard and stick-on rosette. 14 degree headstock angle.

--1968 Josh White. Shiny bowl. All original. A few small blemishes - normal for 40 years of play.

--1968 Balladeer 12. Very early 12. Small roundhole with inlaid rosette. Winged brazilian rosewood bridge. Open gear tuners. Near mint condition. Got that sweet harpsichord thing going on.

--1982 1537 Elite. No issues anywhere. I've not seen a better one ever.

--1982 1311 USA Ultra. My first Ovation. The Urelite neck is bowed beyond hope. Set up with a tall nut to be a slide guitar, which surprisingly works really well! OPP and volume only premap. My first Ovation - can you say sentimental value? Probably worth $100 on the open market (if that).

--1994 EA-68 Viper. Pawn shop find. It's the guitar I forget about until I pick it up and start playing it - and I swear it'll be one of the last to ever be sold. Only a couple of minor, minor blems keep it from being mint.

--1998 DS768 Longneck. Deep bowl, in Cherry Cherryburst. Optima preamp. Perfect condition.

--2000 6759 Custom Legend 12 String. Inlaid rosette. Optima preamp. This has the most amazing spruce top I've ever seen on any guitar. There is so much silking it looks like it's a flame maple 10 top. Plays like a dream and sounds terrific.

-2000 Collectors. Gorgeous Lacewood top that becomes 3-D when you look at it. Tremendous craftsmanship all around. Sweet binding around the body. Optima preamp. This has my favorite neck of any guitar I have or have played. The sound is really special ... not typical Ovation but warm and woody. Those that own these know what I'm talking about.

--Deacon 12. This one's got the "Deluxe" style neck on it with the block abalone inlays. Also has the late Schaller chrome bridge.

--1271 Viper. I've had this guitar for close to 20 years now. One piece Honduran mahogany body with the waist shaping and a mahogany neck with ebony board. Chrome Schaller bridge. The factory completely refinished this guitar about 5 years ago and it is probably the last electric I would ever sell.

--1998 EAB68 Viper Bass. Cherry Cherryburst (I really love this color on Ovations ... in my mind it is a signature color). I've got it strung with flatwounds and it is smooth, smooth, smooth.

--c.2004 1651 (John Lennon Legend Limited Reissue). For me, the ultimate round hole Ovation. All of the best without the bling. Love the nutmeg color. Word has it there are only six of these in the US.

--1982 Collectors. Bought this one from Witko for peanuts to use as a beater guitar. It has been played hard and put away wet and there are all kinds of cosmetic issues. But from five feet away it looks purdy. Soundwise, it's still got it in spades. It is the guitar that is allowed to be played by anyone, anywhere.

So there you have it. I can't decide. Mimi sez keep 'em all. I need to make some room. I play them all and all have something special. So I'm stuck. What say you?

The Ultra or one of the Vipers or the 82 collector.
I've played your 1537 and that's a keeper.
Did that help?

If you decide to sell one of the 68's, let me know...I've been looking for a nice birth year guitar.

keep the EA-68. it's got a shallow case. you won't gain much room selling it.

I have a similar problem... My 'collection' is no where near a Nifty as yours but... I have a 12' x 14' Living space, and I have two guitars coming, and twelve already here... (thirteen really, but I don't count the Vinci Beater! I'm looking for someone who wants to learn guitar, and...) Plus a bunch of effects, amps, gig bags and stuff...

While reading your list, every time I saw something that I Might sell, you stated why you couldn't sell it...

The Trader-Man sez that once his hangers and stand gets full, something is leaving... I don't have that much self-control.

Put some prices on your list... Someone will find space for them!

This is REALLY no help. I could send you another neck for the 1311. OR, if it's an open adoption process, it could return to visit, time-to-time!

Put a price on them, list them up in the FOR SALE section and when you have sold all you can stand....STOP.

Let the masses decide which ones they want at the prices you choose. Can't loose that way.

Or send a couple out as loaners. That way you could reel them back in when you come to your senses. :)

How could you bobbo!?!?!

I read all your descriptions, and I didn't really hear the love from you on some. The JW, the Longneck, Deacon 12. Doesn't mean there's no love there, but really, I couldn't say which one of those treasures to give up.

I could use a good beach/gorge guitar though, so if ya wanna get rid of that ol' beater 82C, I could scrape up some peanuts. That description had some love it in though, I could hear it.

Bob, I think StephenT pegged it. Put them up and see what moves. The rest is/are fate.

Without question ... KEEP the John Lennon Legend.

The rest are more or less replaceable if you change you mind down the road. I wouldn't sell both Vipers or both 12 strings. The old 1117 would be hard to part with. But other than that I'd cut them loose and see what happens.

you got that many and you're only looking for one or two to go, you just need to get some more room.

I can't help you decide which ones, if any, to sell. I have no experience in this area. However, I might be of some assistance in designing a more efficient storage system.

Keep the Legend LTD. Lennon. You said is your favorite, the ultimate and rare.

Put a realistic price on the others and list them for sale.

Then you can get new flavors.

To me, once you think about selling a guitar, it means you do not need it, because you know what the keepers are and those are not going anywhere.

I think you just need a weekend work party for the addition to the music room.

Well, thanks all. I appreciate the input. Good advise all the way around. But I'm no closer to doing anything than before. Beal and ProfBB might have it right. The problem I'm having is that once I think about putting one up for adoption, I can think of all kinds of reasons why they it shouldn't go ... and it outweighs the why it should by a wide margin. Maybe I'm just a Baskin-Robbins kind of guy.

I'm cogitating. We'll see what happens.

I agree with Country Artist; if you're thinking about selling them they're already gone.

To be sure; tape them closed, come back in a couple of months and sell the ones that still have the tape on them.

If contemplating selling is too painful or confusing, send them all to me in Canada...where you will be welcome to visit them at any time.

Then you too can Blame Canada
