I'll take all the respect I can get (Lord knows, I get none at home). What's on the Ovation web page is incorrect. If you'd like, I'll scan and send you pages from the catalogs of the time.
You'll find all this out looking at the archives (on this site) and doing a search on the Custom Balladeer and the Deluxe Balladeer, but to recap briefly, the Deluxe was Ovation's top of the line guitar from 1967 to 1969. It then got a bit more trim and became the Legend (different bracing patter as well.
The Custom Balladeer was introduced around 1972 and was in production (in various forms) until the late 1980's. A very good workhorse guitar.
Check out this link from the Ovation web page and you'll see that somewhere, Ovation made a mistake on the page. And that mistake was one word on the page you linked. Deluxe should have read Custom. I have all the catalogs in file. In other words, "I gots the overwhelming proof ma' man!"

Location: Phoenix AZ | Custom Balladeer, no question about it. But Paul (with all due repects to my friends and relatives from the island), please realize that by default anything in the UK that is "Deluxe" must certainly be "Custom".
But here is the odd twist in all of this: 1112 or 1612 Custom Balladeer is basically a more modern incarnation of the early Deluxe Balladeer (chrome tuners, unbound neck, dot inlays) sans the shiny bowl and 5 point bridge. It was the early Glen Campbell Deluxe Balladeer that really morphed into the 1117 or 1617 Legend (gold tuners, bound neck, diamond inlays).
Anyway, bottom line is that the 1612 is called the "Custom Balladeer" no doubt about that, and it is a pretty darn nice guitar.

Location: SoCal | Dave is right on the "morphing" of the guitars, but the bottom line is that the Deluxe Balladeer became the Legend, and the Glen Campbell Deluxe Balladeer changed to the shallow bowl with different bracing. The Legend had one year of having the same fret markings as the DB but with binding on the neck. Then it went to the full GC neck inlays, but had the newer bracing.

I entered this corporeal realm in California, thank you very much. As for "septics", its a relative judgement. Weeds are so identified, due to desirability and acceptance, not inherent toxicity. If the inference concerns contamination or contagiousness, now there we may be guilty.

Seriously(?), as was stated earlier, that IS a very good guitar! Maybe not a fancy "thorobred", but it's a good, sturdy, dependable quarterhorse.
As I said, I've got the same model, same year, I still gig with it just about every weekend, and it's just starting to get "broken in".
Your best bet'd probbably be eBay (unless someone here is looking to upgrade into the realm of USAOvations).
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd say @ $350-$400 depending upon condition. |
