Location: Phoenix AZ | You could easily add the pickup/preamp or have the factory do it and you would still have a great guitar for a super price. I'm tempted to bite on this one .... Dave |

This is my first post but I have been watching the board for a while. It's a great resource.

Location: SoCal | My opinion only but this is a unique window for buying, not necessarily selling on eBay.
My experience is that there has not been a good source for buying Ovations prior to eBay. I have gone into guitar stores and rarely seen one used Ovation guitar, usually not what I was looking for. Even when I find one, obvious it has been hanging there for a long time. Heck, most of the guitar stores do not even stock the upper end of new Ovations.
On eBay, Ovations post 1978 appear to be selling at 50% or less of the original cost. Sometimes 30-50% less than Orion Blue Book.
From what I have seen, it is only in last year (? or two) that I have seen this large of an inventory of "good to great" Ovations. Over the next couple of years, most of the available guitars will have been sold...then, most of the "good to great" will only be available if someone is breaking up a collection or a musician gets into money troubles and has to sell.
Look at the two Viper basses that Paul and I bought about a month ago. A few months ago, I bought a 1978 #1619 Custom Legend (outstanding, no checking)with OHSC for $350. Orion has it valued for $600-800. Miles couldn't even get his reserve for a listing for a great 1966 Typhoon bass (sorry, I bought it direct.)
Now is the time to buy...these same guitars will sell for at least 25-50% more in 3-5 years, if not higher. |
