Hi,

Does anyone know where we can find out the true value of our instruments and also how many of each particular model was foud. I am trying to value my Viper EAB68 Bass for my house insurance and thought it would be nice to know how many were made?

I suggest you take a look at the FAQ in the links section. You will need to define "true value." for yourself.

As far as number of units made, you could try Ovation customer support. The only numbers we are sure of are those listed in the reference section for the collectors models.

There is also a list of the suggested retail of many guitars in the ref section.

If you need it appraised for Insurance purposes, you will need to contact an appraisor. That's completely different from what the "instrument is worth".

Example. An Ovation UltraGS Solidbody may be worth about $400ish. But to replace it would cost a few thousand as they aren't made anymore, and would have to be custom made. I don't know how appraisers handle a situtation like that.

Chris,

We do know the base USA valuation from the listing at Vintage when you bought it, plus your costs...shipping, duty, and purchase price. That is a good staring for the insurance as, from other postings here, I have to assume the value of an imported guitar is higher than one bought over here.

With the caveat that Blue Books may be better for descriptions than for market values, the 8th Edition Blue Book of Acoustic Guitars ( Blue Book Publications, Inc; Minneapolis; 2003) provides three valuations for the EAB68:

100% Condition: $1,700
Excellent " : $1,250
Average " : $800

And, in the 'for what it's worth department -- no pun intended -- I have sold several Viper basses on eBay, all of which were in better than average condition and all of which sold for under $800.
