Location: NJ | According to the Ovation website and customer service, I have a pre-72 Glen Campbell Artist Balladeer. It has a crack in the spruce top but otherwise in very good condition. I am deciding on having it factory restored/repaired for $375. Is this a good investment? The crack will be glued/fused and the finish will be good as new. Opinions welcome especially if you can estimate its value after restoration or if in mint condition. Serial No. E447.

I believe the 1117 is a Legend, and the 4 is the color. I own a 1117 Legend. I am not an expert, and perhaps 1117 stood for something else earlier on (as yours is a '72...mine is an '81).
I think $375.00 is pretty high for a crack repair my friend. I developed a crack from the bridge to the base of my legend (in the soundboard). It cost me $50.00 for the repair, and it has been solid for about a year now.
Good luck with your guitar. Sometimes the money doesn't matter, it's more about having it done right.

Location: Athens, GA & Gnashville | In my 37 years of eperience with Ovation tops and their restorations, I have found no one that can beat the quality of work that the repair staff at Ovation does.
I will always opt for the factory on repairs. Also, I think their pricing is fair for what you get.

Location: SoCal | Sure depends on the guitar as to rarity and intended use. Assume you are referring to crack into or through wood. As to Ovation - If finish crack, heard that the seal and buff can do a good job for basically pennies; sand top down and refinish for about $350. My 1658 will be going back soon to repair damage done by UPS. Can't believe sealing a wood crack and refinish would be much more.
Again, depends on guitar - only repairing the 1658 due to rarity and the rest of the guitar is perfect. |

Location: SoCal | When you get your guitar back, you'll be amazed at how smooth and wonderful the top looks. If they sand it and refinish it, it will also have the new finish that Ovation uses which is thinner and more durable than the old. The wood will also look more warm ("more warm"?) because a lot of the yellow a top gets is in the finish. You'll like the color of the wood.
In other words, it's worth every penny if you value your guitar. And Norsey's right. A 1117 is a Legend, not a GC Artist. Deep bowl vs. shallow bowl.

I just think it's a better choice made to have a factory redo and especially liked what I heard in the attitude toward fixing a vintage/classic rather than throwing it out! What is the dollar amount when you really value something like an instrument? Hell, look at what some people end up paying on their "Pets"! You ever have a guitar piss on your rug or chew up your shoes? |

Location: Warren,Pa. | Hey Greenman, Here's a little story...I once had an early 80's Custom Legend 12 string. Tobacco sunburst,carved walnut bridge,scratched up brown bowl. Sent it to the O factory to have an Optima put in it ($400). Well.....got it back with a new preamp,I couldn't tell where the old holes were in the bowl, new pickup(maybe std.procedure,but unnecessary), new bridge,new abalone rosette(the plastic was cracked on the old one),new black finish on the bowl,new gold strap buttons,4 new frets!!!
I called the repair Dept. and asked about all this. I was told "when they get one like this,they want it to go back as a poster child for Ovation".
You may pay more, but I don't think anyone else will give your guitar that kind of TLC.

Location: Southington,CT | I have a model#111-4,probably pre 1971.I brought it to the factory because it is also cracked from the bottom of the brigde to the strap peg.Also wanted to know its age but according to the factory guys the documentation for that era is sketchy at best.The serial# is 8949.Anyone out there know the model name or when it was made?Looking forward to an answer.Thanks.

Spend the money. Prorate the cost over the next 10 years versus frequency of grins. No-brainer. I don't believe any OFC member has ever complained of not getting their money's worth from the Wizards at the MotherShip. |
