I have what I believe is a 1980 Preacher Deluxe 12 string for sale. The guitar is in great condition for being 24 years old, but it's not pristine. There are some bruises at the bottom edge of the neck (the part that's towards the floor when you play) that I didn't notice while playing and a small chip of finish on the graphite on the back of the neck. There is some pitting on the bridge, but overall that's in very nice shape. There is a small crack in the pickguard between the bridge pickup and the bridge which the prior owner told me was necessary for proper intonation. I don't know if that's true, but it appears to make access to the intonation screw easier. It's pretty minor and not noticeable from any distance. The body is in very nice condition with only a few signs on use and age. The volume pot is a little scratchy, but I don't think it's been used for a while. The electronics work and the guitar has a nice variety of sounds to it. It took me a few minutes before I realized the "normal" for the tone pot was in the middle. I had it cranked and there was lots of high end.

In my opinion, the action is low and the guitar plays very very well. The abalone inlays are clearly made from high quality materials.

Miles had the opportunity to check out the guitar at the Columbus Guitar Show and I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong about anything above or if I missed anything he can remember.

I do not have an original case for the guitar. It will ship in a gig bag or we can work on some kind of harder case for it.

Please email me at davideidelberg@wideopenwest.com with questions, offers, photos etc...

I thought I'd see what fan club members might offer before putting it on Ebay. As a Hamer Fan Club member and as an Ovation player (I gig more with my Custom Legend than with my Taylor) I thought it would be nice to see this one go to someone who appreciates these guitars.

And Al, $350 won't cut it. ;-)

Just to try an avert a flurry of emails that I have to cut'n paste the same answer....

Yep, I saw the guitar and he described it as it is. Dave doen't need my endorsement, but if someone is looking for a good Preacher 12-string this is it. The action was nice, and I didn't notice any string buzz, no significant fret wear. I didn't hear it (we didn't plug it in) but I'm sure it's fine. All I can add is that it looks like it was played, not abused, and not just stuck in a closet for 20 years, just played. The issues that Dave mentioned are all pretty minor, and in fact you have to really look close for most of them.

Dave's a good egg, I'm only posting this, as I know not many here know him and I've already got a few emails because me mentioned I had seen it, so I thought I would just post my response here.

Some emails came in, some photos sent, but no offers yet. I'll give it another day or two and then it goes on Ebay.

I can tell you from many sold guitars experience - it always goes like this: I put my Ovation for sale here on the board for a reasonable price. I get a few emails but nobody wants to buy it. Then I put it on ebay and it sells for slightly less than I offered it for here on the board. Then the guys here all complain that they should have bought it when they had the chance. It happens over and over again.

I think the reason is that people inherently perform better under pressure. Give them an auction and the clock is ticking ... gotta decide ... time is running out ... I want it. Otherwise without that pressure they will think about it and try to rationalize it from every which angle and ultimately lose interest.

Dave, I feel this is different. When you list, you give a price. So did Tom (Woz), Kurt, and Paul Blanchard. We can either move on, pay the amount requested, or make a counter offer to the seller.

DavidE sent some great pictures that I appreciate. However, this isn't really the forum for bidding as eBay is. I have no idea of what this is worth. I want a good deal but I also want a good sale for a fellow member, the seller.

I challenge anyone to be able to say what is fair. I emailed a couple of members but no input on the value.

So, Al offered $350; when declined, he bumped it. Gee, I'll bump it to $399.00. So, where do we go from here? Again, not a good forum for bidding. Maybe best to go to eBay when seller hasn't fixed a price.

We had the same problem with the Adamas baritone recently.

Tony, you're right. Didn't realize DavidE. didn't list a price. I think if you intend to sell someting, you should list your price. Otherwise go the auction route as you suggest.

Good points everybody. The $350 thing between me and Al goes back to the Hamer Fan Club. That's the standard joke offering price for any Hamer, though I have picked up a couple for around that price. I've also paid over a grand for a couple.

Anyway, here's my OFC price for the Preacher Deluxe 12. $800 firm plus shipping via FedEx Ground. I'm basing that on my understanding that the last one went for around a grand on Ebay, but mine is what Miles termed a player rather than a collector.

I'll check my email tonight. If it's not sold here for that price by the weekend, I'll put it on Ebay for bidding.

Thanks!

DavidE, thanks for listing, good description, and photos - good luck on this.

I'm out...that's my high bid.

Last night I went back through some notes over the last year...on eBay, there was a pristine for about $750 with case. High volume of bidding near end. Again mint/pristine. There was also one for about $350. Both instruments had cases. May be other sales but those were the only two in my notes.

From my interpretation of the disclosure, this quitar is questionable as to electronics and would require a fair amount of work to fix pitting, chips, etc. There are others out there.

DavidE, aren't ya glad you stopped by?

LOL,, I have seen, bought and sold Preacher 12's in the 600-1000 range too. There have been some bargains on eBay in the past, heck there was a GP that went for 600 last week, and we know if someone listed one for 2K+ with a buy-it-now it would go instantly. I have seen, sold and bought breadwinners from $300 to $800 too. EBay is on odd meter to say the least.

Having played it, I'd say $800 is a good price for this axe. The write-up makes it sound worse than it is. Remember his comparison meter are hand finished Hamer's.

Preacher 12 is slightly more sought after by a different crowd than the the Breadwinner and Deacon 6's

I just don't think this is the format for blind bidding especially for instruments with subjective pricing by the market.

My recommendation is to list here if you know what you want for it...we can pass, buy, or negotiate. You want $2,000? If you don't tell us and someone offers $1,200...looks to you as if the individual is trying to insult you. There are several specific examples I can think of similar in the last six months...no price, good faith offer, way out of range seller was thinking.

Unknown price...go to an auction like eBay.

DavidE - this isn't a slam on you...just my frustration as I have been way too busy to waste even the small amount of time this week. And, by the way, a waste of your time sending me photos as I could of told you at the beginning I wasn't a serious candidate.

Again, good luck

Hmm how do I put this....

"I just don't think this is the format for blind bidding especially for instruments with subjective pricing by the market."

Opinion noted, and for the record, I don't agree.

My .016 euros worth: Isn't the title of the page "SELL/TRADE". Leave the auctions to the auction sites. Just my opinion. BTW, anyone want a GP? I'll take the best offer (ha ha).

For the record, I wasn't offended by any of the posts. Very valid points. So I posted an asking price. If I get it, great. If I don't, I make it available to a wider audience. My preference is for a fan club member to own this one.

I would be interested in a nice Deacon plus some cash if that interests anybody. I always had a thing for breadwinners and I like the fancy styling of the Deacon.

Hey, if somebody wants to spend a really outragous amount of money for one of these, Eric Clapton is selling on in the upcoming Christie's auction. I don't think he played it, somehow he just ended up with it.

Take a look
