Joined: June 2004 Posts: 6 Location: Maryland | I am wanting to find out the current market price for a 1990 Ovation Adamas 1689-7 guitar. This is exactly like the 1687 but has a little wider neck.It is tan/blue.No cutaway and in very good condition.Frets are excellent and so is body.Case is a little road worn.Has the OP24 preamp. I am wanting to sell this guitar or trade for a equally priced jazz guitar--like the Epiphone Elitist Byrdland or Ibanez GB10.Needs to have 24 3/4"scale,cutaway,2 humbuckers.Do not want a huge 17" jazz guitar.Something smaller.Let me know what you have or what you are willing to pay.I hace seen some go rather high on Ebay but I figured I would give the people here first crack. Thanks.

Pre 1980 as collectibles are far more valuable than 1990 (or my 1987, also a "-7"). I say this although I understand it is a great instrument. Any damage - have to add in the cost of repair as most will want a very good to mint Adamas - either as a collectible or player. That is IF the factory wants to try...and, there is a point when it is not sellable. An Adamas I went for about $600 in a private sale in early 2003 - according to a guy that saw it, played ok but not in good condition. If being used professionally, other factors would include reliability, upgraded electronics, and warranty - so, maybe a current model would be more desireable to a player. A great condition that is early model may disappear into a collection or another country (i.e., Japan.) And, the value is not driven by any objective measure. The fact that you have not been contacted and it is not already sold possibly indicates that there is no foreign or domestic interest as a collectible. Yet, I've been told it can be better for a non-collectible to have the OP-24 - when the older electronics go out, may not be able to repair. 30th anniversary of Adamas in 2005 and someone (including me) may buy a new "special" Adamas. Does someone want to pay extra to play an Adamas with "broccoli" on the headstock when they can get the textured top from Al (he sells Adamas that were for the export market with textured top.) CVT prices are pretty reasonable and sound pretty darn good (I have the Millennium yr2000 CVT.) There were several Adamas I on eBay that never had a single bid - a 12-string is the latest example just a couple of weeks ago. Yet, new SMT and CVT models are sold consistently on eBay. I would repeat what others have said in postings that the value is what someone will pay. This site is a reasonable place to list a guitar if the seller already has a price in mind...either someone will pay the offered price (as I have bought four from this site in the last twelve months) or one of the members will make an offer, with possible negotiation. It may be necessary to auction it on eBay. If you sell it, great. If it doesn't meet your reserve, then consider that the price is too high and adjust. At least you know that a lot of potential buyers will see it. Recently, a very limited Adamas baritone (? one of six) was offered here...was finally sold on eBay to an overseas buyer.) Anything over $1,400 or $1,500 sale price may require eBay and possible several listings until the seller finds the right buyer. Bottom line - if in great shape: from this board, $1250-$1,600 from eBay $1250 to a max of $1,800, probable $1,300-$1,600.

If you get it great. If not, then you'll get an approximation of what it's worth. Nothing certains though, every auction is like a snowflake ...

Joined: August 2003 Posts: 4619 Location: SoCal | Has anyone seen any pictures? how about a detailed description of any damage  Kim described mine as best or great example of that vintage (1987) (don't remember his actual words) - yet, chip on back of headstock, neck reset, fret dress, etc., etc. Only through the staffs' dedication and craftsmanship was mine brought back to the original glory. Worth to me - forget it, one of the few guitars I won't sell. I always like to be represented - $301.00 (including shipping and insurance.) In all seriousness, check out my posts for the Adamas baritone and the Preacher Deluxe 12 (that I eventually bought) as to a lister that isn't prepared to offer for a specific price. I don't want to be rude or discourteous to our fellow member but, unless he is getting private email offers, this is going nowhere. Guitardr56, I would suggest providing us with your asking price, detailed pictures, and description. Else, list on eBay.

Joined: June 2004 Posts: 6 Location: Maryland | Hello, Thanks for all the info.I am getting pictures tomorrow and will send them to anyone who wants them.I have had maybe 5 requests from folks wanting description and photos.I was just trying to get and idea as to what is reasonable in pricing so that I would not put it too hign and be unrealistic.Yet I did not want to go to low.I just want to be fair and reasonable and had no idea where to even start.I saw today in the Vintage Buying Guide that it says in excellent condition these are $1600-$1700.So what has been said here is right on.This guitar has no fret wear at all and the fretboard has no recess like you see when all cowboy chords are used. The neck is straight and the action is great. The electronics are clear and noiseless and smooth.I went to school to learn luthiery(Bryan Galloups Guitar Hospital) so I am somewhat versed in what to look for and such.I build and repair stringed instruments but for this guitar I just did not have a good feel what to ask. Anyway I will take $1600 for this guitar. If anyone is interested please email me for pics. Again thanks for helping me with determining what the limits are for this guitar.

HEADS UP_____ I have had many requests for pics from this forum and the Fender Forum and offers over $1600. The first $1800 and I split shipping will get this guitar--but act soon because I will be listing this on Ebay at 5pm est.on July4th--Today. For a guitar that is worth $1800 and will only continue to increase in value this is a good investment.Judging from all the offers and interest shown. What is another $200 for a lifetime investment in a clean beautiful guitar.?

If you want to sell it here, post some pics so people can see what you are trying to sell. Good luck on ebay. Hope you get your price.
