SWMBO says the 1688 has more bottom end and a deeper resonance but the 1188 has more twangy highs. But it could be the strings, the 1688 has Elixirs and the 1188 has Adamas 1616's. The 1188 is noticeably lighter and has absolutely no signs of ever being played. No fret wear, no signs of any wear on the fretboard or neck. Looks like it just hung on the wall or sat in the case. Maybe it just needs some loving to open up. There's also a slight difference in the neck profile, the 1688 has more of a V.

TJ - I'm bring both of these for sure :D

I'm curious to get this one next to MusicMischa '83 1688-7. His is about 300 earlier in the year's production run...

Randy,

This was the reason I passed on the 1687-9. As much of a collector's item that it was with Charlie's signature, I just couldn't afford to swing both. I did get Beal's John Hancock though...Fugot did give me a discount for that :)

I like the framed certificates and laser vibrometer plot diagram. They invite visitors to approach for a closer look. and make for a classy display, like the wall in a doctor's office. I admire your decorative tastes, Tim. Personally, I go more for the tacky bar look . . . big gaudy 'look at me!' neon signs that flash bright colors and reflect weird images on everything, glossy or otherwise.

Haha, I would trade with you in second Brad, I like tacky...SWMBO however, likes the doctors office look...it did take her almost 10 years to get me to take down the Farrah Fawcett poster I've had most of my life :p

Beal,

Don't you have a pair of 1688's as well? I thought I read somewhere that one was a special dark blue. Something like serial number 1000 & 2000?

Got any pictures??

Tim... the display looks great.
Except for one little, tiny, little thing.
The album cover needs to be framed.
Whew... there... I said it.
And just to give you an idea of why I'd ever have the nerve to suggest it, I'm the guy who cuts his grass in patterns so the lines are all nice and even.

LOL: In loving memory of "Uncle Art", not really related though. He had the poster in his garage of Sophia Loren in a bathing suit. Classic Man-space art!

I have to say I do miss "Big Blue" but fortunately I do have the 2080D 12 stringer (and of course BAX) to keep me company.

Anyone who hasn't played an Adamas 12 just doesn't know what they are missing.
