For those of us whom have never played one, is it essentially just a large variation on a mandolin?

Based on what I've been told;

Both have 8 strings and are tuned the same except the mandocello might be lower. Longer scale.

The mandocello have an awesome sound.

There are a few Mandocello tunings but the most common is low C, in 5ths. So it's CGDA an octave below tenor mandola. With a change of nut and string guage you can tune them as a Greek or Irish bouzouki. Don't for one second think that a mandocello is just a big mandolin. The scale length is huge by comparison and nothing you can do on mandolin tranlates to mandocello, it's a completely different animal.

You know, I thought the same thing. But when I tried it, it just made me feel "small". Kind of the same feeling I get when I put on a pair of XXL boxers.

It's not the only interesting piece the seller has available. The Godin Glissentar would be fun to try.

You're lucky she doesn't make you wear one of Moody's shirts, too.

I'm willing to pass him around, but someone else is going to have to handle, squeeze and burp him...
