What type of humidifier(s) are recommended for
use, for an elite stored in a guitar case, and where do you put it?

If you ask Woz nicely he'll probably send you one of his homemade Elite humidifers. He gave a bunch out at the last tour, and they work great.

Let's see, I took all of your advice and poked a hole in the lid of a film canister, stuffed a wet sponge in it and stuck it in the closed case.

Hope it works ;-)

I finally just acquired a room full of guitars and my wife bought a medium room humidifier on sale for about $17. I already have a humidistat in the room, so I keep it a little above 40%. During the winter I had to run it quite a bit, but now I only run it about once a week.
Now I can just buy another guitar instead of another humidifier.

I picked up a few "Dampits", the little snake-type ones, and they work really well. They fit just right in one of the little epaulet holes.

Vince, with your guitars you should have a humidity controlled room like Tuppy has. Wouldn't it be great if your wife would let you convert a walk in closet into a guitar room? Mine wants to do dumb stuff with them like hang clothes.

The only problem with Dampit is that the amount of humidification is not constant between soakings and it only conditions a very localized area. It's certainly way better than nothing. But controlling the STABILITY of the himidity is very important. It's the variations that are also dangerous. Same for temperature. I keep my room at 40-42% which is actually on the low side of recommendation, but the good thing is that it's constantly at that level. Dave

Bro' you need a hygrometer --- what happens if you over humidify ... or worse think it's working and it's not?!?

You can try planet waves violin type (or any other humidifier) and just let it float around in your case's headstock area or any other place or in the soundhole ... just get the hygrometer.

I usually store my guitars in the basement. In Michigan it's always cool and damp there, and they stay in the cases until I pull one to use it. Then I re-wet the humidifiers before I take them to where ever I am going. The only problems I experience is in the peak of the summer. Then the temperature change averages 20 degrees or more when I take them from the basement. Same thing if I take them during the winter to a place where the heat is high. I really haven't had any problems YET, since all my guitars are older and have done the expand-contract thing for quite some time already. I also try to keep them in their cases for a while until they slowly adjust to the changes. Like I said ... I've been lucky so far.

an4340,
I now have a hygrometer (GC purchase)! The humidity changes last night were from 42%-54%, temp change lo 68 to 74 high in the room I have been keeping my guitars. What should the temp and humidity levels be?

Regards,

Bobby

Those sound about right to me, but I haven't had the years of experience that some of these guys have. My Matrix has been in humid Iowa and dry Idaho for 30 years with no humidifier and no finish cracks.

Guitars are like people, if you are uncomfortable they will be.

For the humidity keep 'em between 40 and 60%.

I have less control with the temperature, so whatever you personally feel comfortable at. One thing you don't want to is chill them, so try to keep them above 40, and you don't want to warm them (they're not for eating) so below 105. If you can keep them near 70 plus or minus 20 degrees your doing pretty good. Due to thier construction ovations, and adamas are more tolerant of heat and humidity extremes. That's why in Hong Kong and Singapore people like the them. Also, I've heard the same about Jamaica.

What hygrometer did you get?

A hundred years ago, when I was in the Air Force, I had acquired my first Ovation (1111-6) in the Philippines, I was transfered to Colorado Springs, and when My guitar arrived (Winter 1982) The Top had cracked during the 2 month storage time. I have been quite lucky since then (have several O's with no cracks), humidity/temp have never been monitored!

The string suspension one doesn't work on an elite unless you leave it in the area of the cutaway or let it hang out in the headstock area. Planet waves makes an egg shaped humidifier that can go in the headstock area or in the cutaway.

Remember you're not only humidifying the guitar, but you're humidifying everything in the plastic shell of the case, foam, plush etc. It won't be fully humidified overnight, it'll take about a week. Use dampit in the soundport, and then you can lay it in the headstock area once you've got the case above 40% humidity. Doesn't really matter what you use as long as you use something. But since it's naturally above 40% humidity where you are you don't need to do anything. You're lucky.
