Compliments of Fugot, Norseman is officially the proud new owner of a 1537!!! :D :D :D
It's like the Tommy Lee Jones of the 1537 world... a bit tattered and worn, a few cracks and wrinkles, with poc marks here and there, but still has heart, and delivers a strong performance!
She is in need of some TLC, which I was up to 1am this morning giving her (and enjoying every single second!)...it's so bad that my wife wouldn't even talk to me this morning :eek: (o.k. I'm hyping this a bit ;) ).
Seriously though, this is a great guitar...as I mentioned to Mike, it sounds very simular to my 81 1117 Legend (which I consider to be the best acoustical guitar I've ever played) Electronics are down (and literally "out"), but acoustically she has the deep boom of my Legend...but yet a little more balanced (my Legend is very dark toned if ya know what I mean).
I may consider having her repaired/reconditioned (if possible) through the factory someday,... but for now, I am cleaning her up as best I can and am just going to enjoy her right here, right now, anytime, anywhere, and with no worries! She reminds me of that girl you grew up with who was your best friend, and you didn't have to worry about appearances with because you both knew who you were with each other (o.k., there I go again!). What a great guitar!

p.s. If anyone knows where I can find a set of gold tuners that will fit a 1537, please let me know...and Tony C., if you have an update on the crack repair you did (specifically the use of Cy remover) please let me know how it worked (if the remover affected the rest of the finish at all]. Ahhh the journey continues!!! Thanks again Mike!!! |

Isn't it amazing how great these sound even when in less than pristine condition.
The beater that I snagged on ebay months ago went to my brother-in-law. When I told him I had an Ovation for him, he sneered the typical "they all sound like crap" mantra. Course he had only played cheap imports.
Once he played it and was able to speak (because of the big grin frozen to his face), he begged me to sell it to him.
It is now his stage guitar and he plays in almost every night! |

At least with this one you can play it all the time and not have to worry about dings and scratches and play wear, etc.

Put several globs and several thinner strips (as you would actually use)...removes the excess CyA without even dulling the finish.
For anyone who hadn't read the earlier posts, no reason to have a finish (or through the wood) crack that isn't sealed and smooth to the touch. And, many of the finish cracks can actually be removed or mitigated so not noticeable.
So, Man of the North...go do it! |

I am hoping the remover might take some "overglued" lines off my Pacemaker, repair a small fracture in my 1713, and perhaps even attempt more restoration of the 1537 (provided the original glue slopped on was superglue).
I don't suppose it would work with epoxy.
By the way, I just got back from Fleet Farm (a do-it-all type place here in Minnesota)...I had four 3/8ths inch holes where the electronics were removed from the 1537's bowl. I plugged them with Oak plugs and put a little lemon oil on them to darken them up a bit. They fit perfectly, look kinda cool, and definitely better than the open holes, or tape over them. They will pop right out when and if I ever get electronics back inside her.
I'm not sure if it happened in shipping or if it was already there, but the binding had been glued in places along the bowl where it had cracked, and I found about six more inches of crack along the binding that is not sealed. I'll definitely try the Tony Calman Special on that spot as well! This is kinda fun....thanks again Fugot...what a sweet deal!!! And thanks for the Congrats Cliff! You guys on this board are the best..I mean that! |

When I bought this guitar off ebay, the seller forgot to mention the 22 inch bowl crack that went through binding and bowl from one side to the other. that and the modified bridge, well worn epaulet, corroded tuners and electronics rolling around inside. The best was the "professional" repair. lots of superglue smeared overcrack on top and crack along bowl. funny thing is , this guitar always gets picked up and played. which considering the harem I am housing says something...when I had guitar at factory, they said a new top was needed, which comes as an assembly with bowl already attached. didn't seem to make sense to repair... but i am glad it will be played. peace out |

Location: Back in the Valley of the Sun Mesa Az. | It's a great guitar, and it is definitely being played...the crack along the bowl is long...but not as long as the smile on my face when I play her Mike :D .
I couldn't be happier. What a great summer thus far, fishin has been good,...celebrated my 24th wedding anniversary, picked up a 1713 classical and a 1537, which pretty much completes my guitar qwest...(for now anyway).
Thanks greatly to the OFC, I went from being Ovationless and clueless three years ago...to having several quality vintage USA Ovations (but still clueless). I would also add that the inspiration I have received from several posters here, has without a doubt been directly responsible for my return to playing music, and sharing music as a ministry to others...which has also become a ministry unto myself in many ways as well. You guys are tops!
