I first saw Tommy Emmanuel(from Down Under) about 2 years ago on a late night cable show and I was wowed by his musical articulation and the way he incorporates the guitar as a percussion instrument during his playing. He was riviting to watch. I did a little online research and learned that Tommy had tour dates in the states but not here in the East. I sent an Email to his sight and manager asking that he consider playing here in New York City and sure enough last March he played B.B. King's Club.

I missed that performance due to illness but was awaiting his return. I put my name on the mailing list and was sure this year was definitely going to be the year I was going to see this performance up close and personal...... by the time I was notified it was too late there's always next year - I hope. He will still be touring the U.S. for those who may be interested here's the link :

Seriously,

He is a great player and so is his brother.

Phil was at the Brisbane Guitar Show a few weeks ago, amazing as always.

They've grown up a bit since then

I'd like to own the guitars in that pic now!!

I'm another fan GS. He's an amazing and inspiring musician. As AJ mentioned, his brother, Phil, is also an excellent guitarist.

They played in a band together 25 years or so ago called Goldrush. Dunno if James or any of the other Aussies here remember them, but they were worth seeing. I have an old cassette -- Goldrush, Live At Last -- and even though it's in very poor condition I still get goosebumps when I listen to it.

Hope you get the chance to see him sometime.

TE is one of only four "Certified Guitar Player" as named by Chet Atkins. That's good enough for me.

I consider him to be the greatest guitar entertainer ever. I'm sure others will think differ. But Tommy's talent, stage presence, humor (humour for our Aussie and Brit members ;) ) and musical diversity surpasses any other git player, including Mr. Chet.

Anyone check out his 'rock/blues' years? Some good stuff...

Thanks Mark I didn't know who it was.
Slothead Adamas of some sort.

I can watch him for one (maybe two) song(s).
After that, my interest just "wanders" . . .
Same with Kaki.

Sometimes you think: This guy is the BEST guitarist on earth! Have the same thoughts about Paco and John Mac now and then.... Montoya, too....

I'm not completely sure, but I think Tommy E has too much fun playing to really care it he's any good.

We could all take a hint.

jeannie,
tommy has been my guitar hero since i first heard him a bit over a year ago. then, last june, i took my wife to see a bluegrass show at the grand ole opry. i was floored when tommy, as a special guest, stepped on stage six seats away from me and played a few songs. even though we were told video and photo taking were not allowed, i could not help myself and taped his portion. when i got home i uploaded the video to youtube where it stayed for about a week before gaylord entertainment, owners of the opry, instructed youtube to remove my video infringement. man, i was gettin' hundreds of hits on that clip every day too. tommy became quite ill a few months ago and had to cancel many engagements while they got his heart re-regulated. he was burnin' himself up doing over 340 shows/teaching sessions a year.

Tommy is a fantastic guitarist. Sometimes I think he has a problem that elite players of various instruments do - they can fit in more notes per minute than anyone (or almost anyone) else and so they make the mistake of doing it constantly.

Some of the musicians I enjoy the most have more variety and let the spaces between some of the notes speak for themselves. Some of the early Carlos Santana stuff sounds quite simple, but it is beautifully melodic with pauses that just reach out to your emotions. e.g. Samba pa ti

I sum it up: Tommy is a fantastic guitarist. Carlos plays beautiful guitar.
