Joined: May 2002 Posts: 1026 Location: Back in the Valley of the Sun Mesa Az. | what kind of remover would I use to safely take the finish off the soundboard of a vintage Epaulet Ovation? Any ideas? Just "pondering" the doablility of such a task without ruining the wood underneath. Also, I've tried cleaning the fret board on this Elite to bring out more contrast between the maple inlays and the fretboard itself (both very dark)...any suggestions there?

I can live with the guitar as is, just thought I'd spruce her up a bit if it wasn't going to be too much trouble. The thought of "consuming binding and inlays" gave me a sick feeling in my gut. Thanks all for the input though. Norse(hey, I just reached 1000 posts...never knew I could talk [post] so much with saying so little!)man1

I think I know the answer, but thought perhaps someone has found something that works.

I'll try the alcohol wipedown...do I need to worry about getting the alcohol on binding or other parts...I would guess not...also, would the alcohol help lighten up a darkened walnut fretboard? Thanks.

Us it on the fretboard but follow up with some fretboard oil since it will strip some. Naptha is a good cleaner for Lacquer but is oil based and not good on unfinished wood. I use the denatured alcohol on just about everything to remove oils and to check for scratches, etc.

I usually use lemon oil on the fretboard, it is a brand that is almost clear (doesn't have that heavy yellow coloring). Norse(time to come clean)man1
