12 string deep bowl in black or red.

Lanaki has made me jealous....

Doesn't have to be in mint condition as it will be played lots and not sit in a collection.

PM me if any of you are looking to part with one.

I would highly recommend the U681 12-string.

That custom U681 12-string that Al has in stock is definitely a BEAUTY! I've thought long and hard about that one but one thing holding me back is I'd prefer 14 frets to the head as opposed to 12.

BTW, can anyone tell me if there is a noticeable difference in sound quality in the 1685 compared to the 1688?

My experience has been that there is a noticeable difference in tone between the 12 and 14 fret regular Ovations...with the round hole.

I do not own a UTE, so I can't speak for them, but all Adamas 12's that I have owned or played have been outstanding, and they have all been 14 frets to the body.

But if Dave says the UTE is the one, that's the one that I would buy. Pushing the bridge back further to the middle of the top is always a good thing for tone, IMO.

Well, I actually think so far I might be the only one (besides Al) to have owned the 1688 Adamas I, 1685 Adamas II, and U681-12 all at the same time. Comparing the three of them I would say the following:

Acoustic Sound: 1688 and 1685 are identical. You would never know the difference. Likewise, they feel exactly the same, same low action, etc. My personal conclusion is 1688 and 1685 difference is only cosmetic. The U681-12 sounds slightly different than the other two. Not better or worse, just a little different because of the 12 frets bridge placement. In my opinion the U681 is slightly louder and slightly more bass. But it's only a subtle difference.

Plugged in Sound: I never really put these guitars through their plugged in paces. I played a few open mics with the 1685, but 1688 and U681-12 never had left my house. In theory, the U681-12 should be the best because of the OP-Studio, followed by 1688 with OP-Pro, and then 1685 with Optima. In truth, on almost all guitars Optima is my favorite pre-amp. To be honest, I'm not the right person to critique electronics. Many more experienced people than I on this board.

Construction 12 fret vs. 14 fret and cosmetics: This is all personal preference. I happen to really like the 12 fret design of the U681-12. It just makes the whole proportion of the guitar "work" for me. But if you play in the upper frets between 12 and 14, then you'd be better off with the 1688 or 1685. Personally, I think a U681-12 cutaway (to match Jeff's 6-string) would be the rats ass of 12-strings.

So, for me I'm really big on the U681-12 but a big part of that is because I prefer the 12 frets design. Adamas I and Adamas II are sonicially identical, just a question if you want to pay the extra money for the bling of the 1688. I don't think Al officially priced it out, but I would guess that a new 1688 like Lanaki's would run you at least $3500. Maybe more. You can sometimes find 1685's for good prices on eBay. But, all things considered I would still go back to the U681-12.

LOL!!!!!!! You guys are too much. That pharmaceutical scientist comment almost made me spit up me drink at the computer screen.

Thanks for input, Goober and Dave.

Next question....slotheads vs. non slotheads - only a cosmetic difference?

Oh, and thanks for all the PMs and emails with your offers. This place is the best.

haiku,
the slothead vs. non slothead issue has been kicked around this forum at length. go to the "search" option at the top of this page and you will find many opinions expressed. remember that that's all they are, just opinions.

Some (me) say slotheads are more attractive
Some say slotheads sound better because of the string angle over the nut, but you'd be hard pressed to hear it in my opinion.
Some say slotheads are more difficult to change strings (not me).

Given the choice, 10 times out of 10 I'd pick the slot. Not to beat the drum to death, but the U681-12 is a freakishly good looking 12-string. I had the choice to sell the 1688 or the U681-12 for the same money. I choose to keep the U681.

I got my U681-12 on a Tuesday. Played it well into the evening. On Wednesday I was in the hospital with bi-lateral testicular torsion. I kid you not, this guitar can shake your nuts off.

I'm ok with gut rumbler. I'm ok with nut rumbler. As long as it's not a BUTT rumbler!
