Joined: May 2008 Posts: 154 Location: Michigan | Going to see Ana Popovic tonite if the weather holds out. The city of Lansing started last summer, free thursday night concerts called "Blues on the Square" They shut down a couple streets & set up a stage, bring a chair, sit back relax & enjoy. She was there last year & I missed her and heard she was pretty good. Missed the last 2 thursday nights (Mike Zito & Jimmy Dillon) haven't decided on next week (Anthony Gomez) But will be going for Lil Ed & the Blues Imperials & the following week for hometown boy Larry McCray for sure. Forecast near 90, possible showers. Keeping my fingers crossed. Wally

Joined: May 2008 Posts: 154 Location: Michigan | Review Well the temps cooled by showtime a bit & the rain held off. When I got there the warm up band was already playing. I could see Ana's stuff already set up on the porta-stage & imediately noticed a Custom Legend 12 on a stand with 2 Strats,(one was a custom Gigliotti)behind. The warm up band was pretty good (6 Hands Down) and was nominated by the Capitol Area Blues Society to go to the Internationl Blues competion in Memphis in Feb 08. About 7:10pm Ana Popovic & her band took the stage. Ana grabbed a Sunburst Srtat & it was imediately obvious by the end of the first song why I read quotes from the likes of Guitar Player Magazine "Ana is a superb singer who can flatpick fluid jazz lines, craft deep-pocket slide grooves, and bend strings with SRV-style" Jazz news "...proof that the incarnation of Jimi Hendrix is a woman." But my impression was she has her own style as she grew up in a 3rd world country, something the others hadn't had to live through. She played incredible lead lines on that Sunburst Strat, then switched to her Red Gigiotti Strat for more raspery tunes and some slick electric slide. After about an hour and a half the band took a twenty minute or so break. I got up to walk around, saw a tent set up on one side of the porta stage and saw her there. I walked over and she was signing autographs. I had already bought a cd of hers there since the proceeds all go to the musician and nothing goes to walmart and the line wasn't that long since they didn't announce it so I got in it. When it was my turn and told her that was some fantastic guitar playing, I told her I had signd up as a member of the OFC and said I saw hers and said you are going to play it aren't you, she said yes and we made somemore Ovation small talk and she signed the CD cover, said "hello to the OFC" The band came back on stage, Ana took her Custom Legend 12(natrual finish) did 3 tunes with it, well 2 1/2 as the 3rd started out as a bluesy beat lick that part way through she was playing slide on the "O" and as the tune picked up speed she picked up a Strat to finish the tune. She palyed to 10pm, so about 2 1/2 hours total. I was quite impressed to say the least, Guitar Player Magazine probably said it best "She stands poised to shake your foundations" She played songs all over the spectrum, not just blues & I found that very appealing. If you get a chance I wasn't disappointed thats for sure. This is really to everyone here, Lady plays an "O" Wally
