This is a real interesting period piece. Not many like this. Right dab in the middle of the transition. Wasn't called Legend yet. They took the original Deluxe Balladeer (which sounds WONDERFUL), and put on a textured bowl, winged bridge, and bound the neck. This was before they killed it by changing the bracing pattern. If I didn't have one similar already, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I bet it's one the best sounding wood topped Ovations to hit ebay in a while.

I hope somebody here buys this one. It's rare. It was only built for about a year before Ovation went to the full Legend style. With the winged bridge to the unique inlay, it's worth the money to buy.

I'm Bidder #1, but I'm not going any further. About $300 would have been my max.

Rrom the EBay auctiom: {.....The case is a very nice Ovation case that came with the guitar.}
Did they have black cases in 1969? I think not...

This guitar has been listed before. Doesn't look bad, but I agree, that case is not original. Dave, what bracing pattern are you referring to. I assume this had the VT bracing. If so, the A-bracing was a definite improvement, IMO.

This is not the guitar that evolved into the legend. In 1970 they jumped tracks and this guitar shown in the ebay auction (even though for a period of time called model 1117) became the CUSTOM Balladeer. In 1970/71 it was the Glen Campbell Deluxe Balladeer that got renamed the LEGEND. This was the point they added the VT bracing, along with the other changes (textured bowl, SOR, walnut bridge). And to completely complicate matters, at the same time introduced a new Glen Campbell model, based on the new Artist depth bowl.

Correct-a-mundo ...

Isn't it ironic that ovation has come full circle back to some of the very basics that worked to begin with ...

X braces, Deep bowls, Truss rods, etc.

So I had a somewhat low bid in on this one and ended up getting it. I can't believe that a vintage Ovation doesn't fetch the kind of money that they deserve. With so much travel recently, I just got a chance to really clean, restring and play this beauty.

This is a very nice guitar. Aside from a small crack (seems to be only lacquer as it doesn't go through the soundboard), it is in remarkably great shape for almost 40 years old.

The original owner said that it was sitting in a closet for the past 32 years ... and based upon the amount of dust and grime on it I have no reason to doubt. But it cleaned up real nice.

This is one of the best sounding Ovations I have played. One thing that I really noticed is that the angle of the headstock seems a lot steeper than the rest of the O's that I have. Did they change this at some point?

Maybe this accounts for some of the great sound that comes out of this one.

Bobbo, somewhere in the early 80's the headstock angle changed from about 14 degrees (I think) to about 7, in an effort to reduce headstock breakage. I would guess that some sound was lost as well.

Beautiful guitar. I'm looking forward to hearing how it sounds.

I noticed that my Matrix has a sharper angle. I don't suppose the urethane neck will ever break. Nice grab, Bob.

This guitar brings back memories. The headstock angle made a real difference. I wonder if you could custom order an original headstock angle..

I left voicemail and email for the seller when he originally posted the '69 on Craigslist in the SF Bay area. He called me when I was rushing to a meeting with my boss, and I had to excuse myself. I left other messages later, but I was too busy to pursue it. He is about 100 miles away, so I didn't have an opportunity to easily go see it or pick it up.

I was thinking about it again when the notice showed up here for the ebay listing. Glad it found a good home. Where did it travel to?

Cheers,

M^2

Nice Score there Bobbo!!!
Congrats.
The lower 7* peghead did take away some sound I think. Adamas are 10 and I think the new stuff now has gone from 7 up to 10. (I could be wrong on that)
A forty year old guitar that doesn't have finish cracks has finish that is waaay too soft and thick, not a good thing.
It might not be the original case but that would only matter to a real total guitarhomo. Case is a case and if it's a good one, who cares?

W2, that's good news on the increased neck angles. Congrats to Ovation for keeping up on the details of premium acoustics.
